I'm not trying to stir up controversy with this topic but......

Something bugs me that she's deciding her baby is genderless before said child can even grow up, learn about pronouns and form an opinion for themselves. She calls it 'a thing'. You're born with female or male body parts and there's no inbetween. You can change that for yourself later in life, and i'm all for that.

It's her kid though. So i guess none of my business. I just wanted to see what other people think.

Only issue I see is calling it "a thing" seems dehumanizing to me. Like just call it your child, kid, they/them, or just their name.

That's admirable but as soon as that kid starts interacting with other kids or adults who don't respect the parent's wishes, they're gonna be just as gendered as anyone else.

with respect to gender, the kid can say what they like once they have an opinion, and then people can use that. i don't see the problem. its ultimately irrelevant.

I suppose so, looking at it that way. Maybe my oldschool brain is maybe a little too narrow minded. I had never heard of somebody doing this so it was strange to me.

Yes, it's a tad narrow minded but you seem like you're willing to listen. It's mostly so that the child has a say in their gender as they form a self identity and won't feel forced into a box one way or the other. And for the time being it IS rather rare. But in some countries like Germany, it's been common enough that you can opt not to check a box on the birth certificate until the child is of an appropriate age to decide for themselves. And rightly so, there's SO much discrimination you'll face even with an amended birth certificate because plenty of the anti trans laws in the US go off the initially issued one. :/

I think they will inevitably be forced to gender their own baby once it is large enough to need real clothes, since clothing is one of the most strictly and visibly gendered elements of our culture. And as other people have said, the child will be gendered (i.e. treated as a gender and given a personal sense of gender identity) by society. Breaking down gender is important, but I think we need to break down the aesthetic elements of gender before we can have much success with the social/behavioral elements.
