As much as I'd like to believe that Microsoft is killing it in japan, their historical performance leads me to believe that this is more likely a byproduct of console availability than it is anything else.

What are the production numbers looking like? Are PS5s literally sitting on shelves in Japan?

The Series S is probably the best deal in next-gen consoles ATM. Its small and cheap and runs everything really well.

While the Series X and PS5 are like, slightly better, many people don't care enough about the different between 1080 or 1440p and 4k, and the scarcity+scalpers make bothering for a Series X and PS5 not worth the like, 2x (or more) the price of a Series S.

This I doubt a significant amount of Japanese gamers are suddenly Xbox fans after their lackluster sales in Japan in the past.

I can see the S being appealing due to how small it is. The digital PS5 is still huge just not as big as the one with the drive.

I'm pretty sure Sony can handle a loss once every 8 years (this happened in 2014 as well) considering total sales for PS5 vs. XBX/S as of April.

Switch is the only console making a splash in Japan. Hasn't the home console market been dead since the mid-2000's there. It's the only reason I give any hope to the rumors of a new Sony handheld.

from what i understand pc gaming has been taking off in a huge way in japan over the past 3-5 years whereas japan has been primarily a console only market in the past. This is probably why xbox as a brand has been more popular as of late, crossplay between people who still want to play on console, and their friends who are now on PC and using xbox gamepass.

Xbox has historically sold like a whole tens of units per week in Japan. So this is actually a lot more momentous that it sounds on the surface.

Japan's best selling company has historically usually been alternating between Nintendo and Sony. Nintendo mostly sells better overall because Japan has a great public transportation, which adds a lot of value to a console being handheld, and Nintendo has always had a handheld console, making their product more appealing to the JP audience. But Sony had that big push with the PSP near the end of its life, and the PS3/4 has always done well there (Vita was a complete failure, but they did have a pretty sizable sales first year, just not even remotely close to what the 3DS was pulling at the time). They're just not as dominant as they were in several generations worldwide

Microsoft in the meantime has no handheld and most of their flagships or mainstays are all by Western studios. Since Japanese studios simply understand the Japanese audience better, Xbox has historically struggled to break through that market at all

As to how this even happened, it speaks more to the PS5's failure to justify itself more than Xbox doing anything out of particular. Microsoft has done the bare minimum in Japan for over a decade now, only releasing consoles there out of obligations. I think they recently also sponsored some popular vtubers, which might've given this push.

I feel the steamdeck qualifies as a vector to playing xbox gamepass games.

Due to microsoft changing up their business model from selling consoles to getting everyone they possibly can subscribed to gamepass, with the console merely being another way to get more people subbed to gamepass, I feel the actually good handheld pc's that are coming out these days are providing new opportunities for an expanded userbase.
