So basically you need to use the same precautions as you would take for preventing the spread of COVID. We are so fucking doomed. The smallpox vaccine is 85% effective at preventing monkeypox, however the vaccine hasn't been available to the general public since the 1970s. The vaccine is somewhat risky, with 7.8 cases of myopericarditis per 100,000 US military personnel vaccinated in 2003. Monkeypox has a mortality rate up to 10% if untreated; the current variant circulating in the US is less deadly and there are a couple antiviral medicines available. The initial symptoms are fever, headache, muscle aches, chills, and sweating. This is followed by a papular rash which starts as small flat spots (macules) which turn into small bumps (papules) filled with pus, which eventually burst and scab over.
