LAS VEGAS (KLAS) Lake Mead has dropped below 1,050 feet, a milestone level as the Las Vegas valleys water supply dwindles during a 22-year drought.

Overnight monitoring and levels reported through the morning show the lake fluctuating, dipping to 1,049.97 feet at around 5 a.m. before rising again.

The 1,050-foot mark is important because it marks the level at which Intake No.1 can no longer function, according to information from the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA). Intake No.1 is one of three intake straws that take water from the lake for delivery to the valley.

vegas itself is fortunate because they have an intake that is far lower dedicated just to them that will last a lot longer than the remaining ones will that serve california and arizona and whatnot

Barring a desalination breakthrough, the SW was doomed to begin with. It should be active government policy to try to halt growth in those areas.

Should be noted that part of the reason for Mead's late rapid draw-down is because releases from upstream at Glen Canyon, (which is also drying up), have been halted to preserve that dam's ability to continue generating power.

That lake has dipped so far since I was a kid. I cant imagine it being around in 10 years.

That town was meant to be a temp city for miners, not a massive world tourist destination.
