As a Christian myself, I view it as a negative because the people who consider themselves born-again are nearly always those Christian dominionist types that the country and the world need a whole hell of a lot less of.

You can usually take it as "I was a shitty person and burned all my bridges so I turned to the church so I'd have some social ability in my life" or "I was a shitty person, burned all my bridges, and realized I fucked up and want justification to judge all of my previous friends"
