If they wanted things to be cordial, they would keep their offensive belief to themselves. It's doubtful that it's the first time they've ever offended someone with it

Everyone, even "good" people, draw the line at offense somewhere. If we didn't, we'd literally be pleasing people 24/7 and that simply isn't possible.

Not trying to argue against the general sentiment since I assume you're coming from a place of cultural progressivism, of which I consider myself part of that particular demographic. Chances are I'd agree with anything you're referring to by default; I just wanted to point out that aspect of things since it often gets overlooked during these sorts of conversations.

For me it would depend on what the belief is, as well as who it's offensive towards.

I find myself thinking about The Woman in White more and more these days. The villain in that book operates by exploiting society's expectations of "politeness" in order to do horrible things right out in the open, because he's rich and aristocratic and he's a man, and he knows it would be rude for his social "inferiors" to call him out on it. And he's correct. He gets away with a whole lotta nasty shit because the people around him value "civility" more than justice.
