I like spicy food where the flavor adds to the dish, but not so much when it's one of those situations where the spice is just heat/pain/ordeal rather than for flavor.

So I'll put peppers (or pepper) or hot sauce or chili powder or whatever into a dish while cooking, but I'm not going to go around eating 10 billion Scoville peppers just to show off how tough I am.

No. If something has a little kick to it, I'm fine with it(So I tolerate it). But that's about it. I don't really like food to be spicy if it doesn't need to be or whatever... Those people trying to eat the spiciest thing they can can do whatever they want. That's not for me, and seems like a weird thing to do, tbh...

I disagree with the premise of the question: heat alone isn't "tasty". :) Jalapenos are tasty and I enjoy them in many things. Hot for the sake of hot wings...not so much.

Heat adds some interest, but there's a line after which it's just showing off or masochism or something.

It entirely depends on the dish. I personally don't like spicy soups or ramen, however I do like spicy rice and noodle dishes. I like spicy chicken in all forms, but don't like spicy beef or pork.

I also don't like green peppers/chilis as they all taste like grass to me, the red ones are okay. I also don't like heat for heat sake. It has to taste good.

That being said, I MUCH prefer spice from things like horseradish, wasabi, mustard, etc.

I LOVE horseradish sauce on steaks and thats probably the only way I like spicy beef.

Oh and Chinese mustard is like the best thing ever if you can find good ones.

I like spice right up to the point that it starts interfering with my ability to enjoy flavor (which is, I admit, at a pretty low level of spice). If the spice is overwhelming other elements in the dish, I don't care for it.

Fresh jalapenos have some heat, although - to be fair - it's not uncommon to buy some and find out that they are duds, sure.

They aren't spicy on the same scale as the peppers that exist solely for the purpose of being hot, but that's my point. Taste > spicy simply for the sake of spicy.

Most jalapenos are basically pickles. They give a little tang and bite (acidity + spice) that helps a lot of food.

Yeah I think that cultures that have had spice for centuries have perfected it as an art. For example, Indian, Cajun, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, some Scottish food. Spice enhances a lot of flavors, especially fat and protein. It has kind of become a trend now to do scoville torture. Hats off though to people that can tolerate ghost pepper/reaper challenges though.

It's funny, because I make my spicy foods actually spicy, whereas the Vietnamese cooks I work with barely put spice in their batches of general tso or mongolian. And the people around here like my stuff better. *shrugs*

Really? I've eaten with Vietnamese families where I wanted to just hide in the bathroom during dinner. It was "call poison control" spicy. Fermented/pickle habaneros and what not.

I stopped eating spicy stuff young because I went to a burger place with my dad once. I asked if I could have his pickle. He said my pickle? And I said yeah and pointed at it. He said, yeah, you can have the pickle. And I took a big bite. Problem was, I had never seen a jalapeo He said the face I made was priceless He apparently tried to sneak jalapeo into everything after that, but I was too smart, and always found it

Your heat tolerance builds up overtime if you eat a lot of spicy food. There used to be a time when I thought Jalapenos were hot, now I can eat a whole jar of them and barely feel a tingle. Even though I don't think it has been discussed anywhere and it could be bull, I also feel eating a lot of spicy food deadens the temperature sensing nerves as well. For instance, I can eat a French fries right out of a fryer without being in pain ever since I started eating lots of spicy food. Probably not a good thing to be honest, although I suppose it makes sense since the capcasin binds to the temperature sensing receptors and if you are overloading them constantly then it would make sense that they would be screwed up for temperature sensing as well.

Capsaicin is pretty safe. I mean you have dudes on Youtube that eat the super concentrated stuff as some type of challenge like 10,000 Scoville's or something ludicrous. The danger with that stuff seems to more choking to death as it causes you to cough uncontrollably more than toxicity. Raw capsaicin is pretty nasty tasting though, tastes a bit like metal, so I usually avoid hot sauces that use it favor of the more pepper based ones.

This.

I like to take chicken, cheese, and Cholula and roll it up in a tortilla. I love sardines on crackers with sriracha. One of my favorite appetizers is jalapeo poppers.

And not just capsicum, I love ginger candy. Ginger is one of the more underrated "spicy" foods. Horseradish is good too, and wasabi.

I accidentally made a batch of chili using cinnamon (the bottle was right next to the cumin. I grabbed the wrong one, measured a bunch in my hand and just as I dumped it into the pot it hit me that the color was wrong). It gave the chili a very interesting bit of heat, different than peppers.

Ehhhh I guess. Waters not as spicy as a jalapeo either, doesnt mean it water is spicy

but maybe I shouldve used an Anaheim pepper as a better example. A little more in-your-face sweet and snacky than a habanero, but obviously not as spicy.
