Gotta be prepared for the worst here. She already made it to the hospital (this happened about an hour ago now).

She's lived a long and prosperous life (she was a high school math teacher for many years) and this isn't a surprise, as she's been on the decline for months. But damn, it sucks just the same. Lots of memories with her and Grandpa (who's been gone almost a decade). I remember how we used to give Grandma Fritos in a different way for Christmas every year and that was awesome (those were her favorite snack at one point and it just became tradition). Or all the fun stuff we did at their house. Or hearing a few stories from her childhood, or how Grandpa was persistent with her. Last time I saw her she kissed my upper lip (Grandma is the only non-partner I'd let get away with that).

Hugs, cheer-ups, whatever are appreciated but not required. Any of you got grandparent memories you wanna share?

Sorry to hear that. My grandma passed this year at age 100. Her living a long and good life doesn't make the loss sting any less.

If you're anywhere near her, go visit and say goodbye. I was lucky and got to do that with my final grandparent, and it made things a bit more bearable.

Thanks, guys. Appreciate it.

UPDATE: Shockingly good news - she's alert, though slurring her words. She said she wants resuscitation if need be so she could beat my uncle at cribbage again, which is NOT what she'd said in her hospital stay last week. I'm pretty astonished considering she'd been sleeping 22 hours a day and hardly existing, but we'll see. She's said before that she had no interest in being a centenarian so nobody thought she wanted to fight.

I'm not, unfortunately. My uncle took her down to Texas to live with him once there was a COVID outbreak at her assisted living facility up here in Wisconsin.

I'm so sorry to hear that Andy but hoping that that good news pulls through.

If it's any hope for you, at the beginning of 2020, my 93-year-old grandma also suffered a stroke and everyone that could possibly get to the hospital was called to come (this was like two months before COVID). Amazingly when we got there she was conscious and alert and acting herself and they had an update for us that death was not immanent. Unfortunately she had a lot of health complications and she ultimately died a few months later but that's a few months longer than we initially expected, and hopefully the fact that she's alert is good news for surviving much longer than a night.

Thanks everyone!

Update is she's still fighting and still has shown a desire to live, but:
  • Her arteries are clogged and, at her age, this is irrecoverable.
  • She has lost her ability to swallow and this isn't expected to return, so she's hooked up to a catheter that's going to feed her for the rest of her life.
  • Her brain seems to be okay.
  • She is still very tired and weak. They don't want to release her from the hospital for at least a few days
  • My parents are heading down to see her and their support is expected to help her rebound should they make it in time. They leave tomorrow but probably won't arrive until Monday.
Needless to say, it's unknown how much longer she has, and it's day-by-day. So... hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Honestly, what she's going through doesn't sound like "living" to me. I'd love to go see her, but I'd have to tag along with my parents, and for the most part I'd just lounge around not doing anything.

Every day is precious, and I'm glad she has the strength to fight this. Still, my condolences since this isn't an easy situation for anyone to go through.

I don't want to worry you, but regret is a terrible thing. You want to be 100 percent on this.

I saw her two months ago and wondered if that would be the last time, and she beat me at cribbage. If I went now I wouldn't get a chance to lose to her again. For some reason I always do even though it's usually close.

It's a two-and-a-half-day car trip and my uncle doesn't want anyone flying there out of fear of picking up viruses in airports/planes, since he doesn't want Grandma contracting anything. I'd have to tag along with my parents... and what would I do? I don't know anyone down there who isn't family. My cousin just gave birth two weeks ago so she's obviously busy. My other cousin apparently has COVID. Who am I gonna spend time with, the dog?

No new updates btw. I presume that's good news... for now.
