I had a job interview about two weeks ago and it went well. I have a friend who works at this location and they said that the manager there wants to hire me and schedule me. The manager really liked my interview and complimented me a lot to my friend. That night, after my interview, I got an email requesting my references so they could contact them. So I sent them the next morning. They reached out to my references the following week, asking to have a brief conversation over the phone or via email and both of my references replied with times they are available to talk but the manager never got back to them after that. It's now 10 days later from that. As far as I have been told, no one else has been hired so I'm not worried that they went in a different direction. Should I be contacting them about this and ask where they are in the hiring process or let them take their time? During the interview they did mention they want to have people hired in June so they can start onboarding before July...

I also don't want to be pushy because I am unemployed right now and do need this job to work out

Can you ask your references if they were contacted?

It would be easier to ask your references first

I did, that's how I know where things are with them. My references both said that they had received emails asking when a good time to talk is, they replied, but the manager never got back to either of them (ten days later, I asked them today). My friend who works at this location did tell me that the manager tends to drag their feet with stuff, and that no one else has been hired.

So I guess I should just write up an email asking where they are in the hiring process because I'm still interested in the position and opportunity to work with them.

In that case I would contact the hiring manager and ask for an update if possible and if there was any difficulty in contacting the references

What kind of job is this? Follow up next week on the status. Managers/interviewers do get busy or they change plans. I wouldn't follow up again if they don't get back to you after the first attempt..Or at least you don't have to. Really depends how bad you want the job, but following up once a week is fine. If twice a week, one on Monday and one on Friday.

I don't get people who have interviews and always wait for the company or HR/management to call them to follow up. I mean you did sacrifice your time, but know there they are interviewing many people and they get busy.. and you are competing with them for a job.

I had an old coworker that I put in as a reference for an opening in my dept and had a horrible experience with it..To be fair he didn't hear back from them, and they had someone internally in mind, so he didn't hear a response, but the friend kept asking me for updates several times a week and never once followed up with them, and then got passive aggressive with me. Like I just handed his resume and recruitment and management was the one that handled it from there. Don't use me. I realized he never followed up with them once since his interview. like wtf.

Follow up. Odds are there's an internal process they need to go through for new hires and somebody that needs to take action to move the hiring process along got busy with other tasks and could use a reminder. You can pick out a follow up email template and edit it to suit your situation/audience. As another poster said, following up shows interest. Nobody is going to be angry if you ask when you might hear about the next step of the process after waiting a week or two.
