You've just described every kid. Most boys won't help either unless parents force them to.

Maybe they are parenting, and they just have different priorities than you do.

Why do you think it's a requirement for good parenting to force a child to do yard work lol

I mean, you can be a bad parent that makes your kids do yard work or a good parent that doesn't but trying to instill a work ethic into your kids is a good thing

Well, my parents said it builds character, but I believe your mom is probably a bit more accurate. Although, I like mowing the lawn and trimming the bushes, since the machines we had went through that stuff like a hot knife through butter and it look really good after. It was the de weeding that was a pain in the ass for me. All that stupid crab grass that refused to be pulled that I would have to spend hours on to make the planters look immaculate, yeesh.

Why do you equate yard work with instilling work ethic?

Like I totally get kids should do chores and contribute to the running of the household. But why is yard work that contribution? I wouldn't even want a child bothering me if I'm trying to do stuff in the yard. Go clean your room.

Because yard work is a pain in the butt, especially if you have a large yard. I mean a lot of people have gardeners for a reason.

I don't think it's the only way, or even necessarily the best way, but it is one way to do it. Any work can help instill a work ethic.

The insects were pretty annoying too. The hornets & wasps would always pop out of the lawn looking out for vengeance when mowing. I mean, they had plenty of time to get out of the way, I don't know why they are so pissy. You really dreaded if the grass got to a certain height and you had to cut because you never knew what was going to pop out at you.

So what you're saying is, you're the Platonic Ideal of childhood and every parent on Earth should aspire to raise their kids exactly the way you were raised?

Nope, we are delicate flowers who need to be transplanted into good soil and watered daily.

Of course most kids aren't gonna wanna go and do chores unless they are either

A) forced
B) they're earning money/treats for the work

Why? It's not like any kids growing up today are going to be able to afford houses when they grow up anyway.

No reason to know how to care for your yard if you're never going to have a yard. In the same way that most people don't think we should teach every kid today the proper care and maintenance of a horse. Or how to keep your sword and armor from rusting. Or how to empty your poop bucket in the street without hitting any passing pedestrians.

Hell, I'm a grown ass woman and I don't enjoy hula hoeing and bagging up weeds. I'm also whatever the opposite of a green thumb is, maybe a death thumb? Couldn't keep anything short of a plastic plant alive. I enjoyed laying down bricks and stones to make pathways in the front and backyards, that was fun.

I would get out of yard work as a kid by running over random things and breaking the mower. Like I can't tell you how many times I strait up bent the mower blades or how many tree branches I obliterated.

After about 5 years and 30 mower blades (and probably half a dozen mowers), my parents finally got the hint and wouldn't let me mow the lawn anymore.

Funny thing, as an adult I love yard work. At least doing it as much as my body allows.
