Diablo 3 is a fine game but it's a bad sequel to Diablo 2.

So apparently it costs $110,000 to unlock everything this game has to offer. Wow.

It's pretty insane. A mobile game I have played a lot over the years is ffrk and a single gacha pull is 30 dollars (and the game gives you about 3-5 free to play currency a month worth of pulls)

So it would take literally thousands of pulls in that game to spend this much to get one character maxed and they will for sure add more later. Kinda nuts lol

I mean, Im not trying to go out of my way to defend this game, but I feel like the monetization aspect is being criticized WAY too harshly (compared to other mobile games) just because its Diablo.

what does that mean exactly

like I get that the monetization of this game is bad, but in practice does the game seem set up in a way that anyone would actually spend that much money? Is that just if you want to make all the numbers go to the top without actually playing it at all?

it feels like when Halo Infinite came out and people were like woah, it would cost $xxxx to buy every cosmetic item in the game! it was a pointless metric because thats not how a normal player engages with a game

So to get max power you need to get 5 star legendary gems with max attributes. The process of doing this and the odds on it (the chance of getting a 5 star gem is like .001%) adds up to that money on average I believe.

Does anyone actually need this though.

I feel like this is absolutely no different from getting max power in Diablo 2, ie perfect runewords and/or uniques in every slot (and max rolls for stats that are randomized), perfect runes/jewels in every slot (once again maxing the rolls on the jewels) and an inventory full of charms with perfect rolls. All the guides touted these kind of setups as the optimal end game. No one ever actually gets there legit. And you will be able to absolutely steam roll all content long before you get there.

Is that like, maxing out a character in FGO i.e. something no one has to actually do to enjoy the game.

Not defending Diablo Immortal, looks bad, just curious

Like the answer is no. But when I see asmongold putting in a few hundred dollars and showing the different between a psy to win run where you get lots of drops vs a free to play run where you get 0 it is like... yikes lol. It's obviously really bad. I don't mind spending money on mobile games, I have played ffrk for 5 years now and I support it because it doesn't have ads or anything and it gave me a lot of amazing content. But this game is horribly abusive. It's not the worst offender, but it's probably the worst offender from a well known company.

ITT people who whaled in gachas like Fate Grand Order, Fire Emblem Heroes, and Genshin Impact relieved that their game is not Diablo Immortal.

I think for me the 110k is the headline but it's really the day to day stiff that I saw from asmon that mostly stuck with me. The difference is pretty crazy tbh

If its too expensive then people will shit on it and Blizzard will hopefully adjust the pricing. I think the 100k thing is truly silly, no one does that

i mean really its a five dollar battle pass

i played diablo 3 at launch (free game w/ wow subscription deal), so maybe some of this has changed

what made diablo 3 bad includes, but is not limited to:

  • horrible, nonsensical story
  • extremely poor level pacing*
  • single player lag*
  • they say war is "long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror". diablo 3 is loooooong periods of boredom punctuated by maybe one challenging enemy randomly popping up every once in a while*
  • people i know tell me "no no, it gets good after you finish the game and you can start doing rifts". i posit that if a game isn't fun for the first 20 hours, that is the sign of a bad game*
  • the inventory clutter/management is super boring and gets in the way of the actual gameplay*

basically, diablo 3 took out all the good stuff and replaced it with optimized skinner box elements

*look, i understand that those criticisms probably apply to the genre as a whole, but even if you think it's "better than the average diabloesque", that doesn't make it anything other than awful

i get it, it's hard to make a title feel immersive when it is an isometric loot game

i was a huge fan of the original diablo! it had a distinct beginning and end and the characters made sense. diablo 3 eschews that in favor of people who just want to grind loot and see numbers go up again and again, at which point i'd just recommend something like cookie clicker

if i'm wrong about any of these points, please let me know. but hopefully no one is confused anymore

Ah I see, you are comparing at launch diablo III to Diablo Immortal

Well I tried immortal out and its like a lite and meh version of the current diablo 3. Although I will likely have some fun with it, especially since you can use b.net balance to make purchases and I have about as much as that as I like because I have a lot of wow gold.

So this is nice. It's pretty fun but the cash shop is very bad still.

Current Diablo 3 is good and it's very little to do with rifts. It's due to the changes they made to the game in general, rifts came later in the game so it comes with them but really it's just the loot and skill system getting better.
