You learn to fix a lot of things yourself. I didn't know how to repair drywall until a towel hanger got pulled out of a wall. I opted to buy a $100 HVAC motherboard and replace it myself rather than pay a contractor. I did the same with the HVAC fan motor blew. Raw parts are often far cheaper than service and are pretty simply to replace. I've replaced sinks, faucets, ceiling fans, showerheads, etc over the years because it's just simpler. I'll even do some basic wiring, although in general electrical work is where I draw the line on doing things myself.

I saved a friend of mine from hundreds of dollars to pay a guy to fix his stove by redirecting him to a youtube video where he was able to follow and fix it himself for $15. There's so many "dad repair tutorial" videos out there.

This is one of the reasons I don't want any pets just yet. I have stuff I need to pay off before I want to go down that road in my house.

Because that's not unique to homeowners. If I get a $1k vet bill I still have to make rent.

you clearly missed my point. You dont have an extra $1100 in repairs on top of that.

Consider this a mistake and learn from it. Last year the fan on the outside part of our HVAC stopped spinning. Googled symptoms to determine it was a bad capacitor. Youtubed how easy it was to replace it. Bought a new one for $20 on Amazon and fixed it within 15 mins. Can't imagine how much an HVAC tech would have charged.

My igniter went out in my oven. Guy gave me proposal of 500 and said it would take 3 months for part. I got on Amazon, ordered the part for 30 bucks and fixed it myself within 3 days. Why he said 3 months for the part still baffles me.

renters have rent payments and car payments too. they're just simply saying those expenses aren't unique to being a homeowner, not that those unexpected bills don't suck.

And definitely this. I had to repair a hole that I accidentally punched in my wall. As in I wasn't trying to actively punch the wall out of anger but more I just hit it out of frustration after stubbing my toe by the bathroom sink much like someone would pound on their desk or something and it happened to go through lol. Luckily I still had some paint and texture spray leftover from when I painted my house when I first moved in so it was a pretty easy fix after watching some youtube videos about how to patch the dry wall. I always wondered how much it would have been if I had hired someone.

To be fair, there's a pretty big difference between a $3,000 bill you expect to pay every month vs expecting to pay a certain amount and then having unplanned expenses that you have to pay for on top of that. If your rent is $3,000, then you're likely expecting it to be $3,000 under normal circumstances.

Yeah I know I'm just a salty renter.

But also part of that rent would theoretically be going to maintenance/repairs.
