I don't think it does.

I beat it in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. Absolutely brutal game. If the SMAS version is the same one, then it absolutely counts.

I don't see why not. That's the version I tried and I couldn't even finish the second level. Brutal is just scratching the surface.

The thing about the All-Stars version is that it saves your progress after every level. Not every world. Every level!

beating a game counts as beating the game yes

like if you want to be technical then putting it down in Backloggery I would be specifically listing Game: Super Mario Bros: Lost Levels, Compilation: Super Mario All-Stars but that's just a matter of cataloguing

So what? There are plenty of games that save your progress after every level.

The thing is in All-Stars you can choose what level to start at, not just the furthest you got. So if you want to beat it like the NES game, just make sure you beat the game by world. In the original you had infinite continues per world, so you don't have to beat the whole game in 1 run. Of course you would have to leave your NES on, but let's just say the save system covers that for you.

Kinda weird how Lost Levels was a disk system game but didnt save progress. It saved high score and how many times youve beaten the game though (to unlock Worlds A-D you had to beat the game 8 times)

Does beating one game count as beating Mario All-Stars? Nah, you gotta beat them all.

I get what OP is saying. It's taking an updated version that adds more lax rules that allows the player to require less concentration and skill to accomplish the same task. It would be like playing one of the modern Mega Man collections, and playing Mega Man 3, and anytime you take damage, you use the rewind feature, and after you beat it, you claim that you did a no damage clear. Yeah, you technically did that, but you also were playing a version of the game that allowed you to take breaks and never commit to full concentration.

Yes. Besides, it's not like the original is available in the west.

It was on Wii Virtual Console. Not sure off the top of my head if it's on one of the services that's still operational.

I don't think you have to beat a game using the game's original conditions to count as beating it. That's just an odd stipulation.
