Active shooter drills

31 years old here. Our schools had lockdown drills here and there, but never an active shooter drill. Just wondering about others.

My sister is a first grade teacher and had to go over an active shooter drill with her first grade classroom. First grade. It just got me thinking if others grew up with these drills or not.

No but we had tornado and fire drills.

Didn't even live in tornado valley but the small chance of one necessitated them I guess.

No. Columbine happened when I was in middle school. My parent's were out of town and me and my sister were staying with my cousins and crazy religious aunt. She didn't want us to go to school the next day because she thought there would be shootings all over. Thankfully she was wrong, of course.

There was (and still is, though it's a new campus) high school where I grew up. I don't recall ever have drills of any type.

We had 'lockdown' drills in high school, so, they didn't call it an active shooter drill but it was the procedure to do in that scenario. There was also at least one real lockdown situation where I think it was a pursued criminal was on the loose near the school but they never entered the campus.

I had "intruder drills" which were probably the same thing. Basically cover the windows, hide in a corner, and be completely silent while an admin went around banging on doors and rustling door knobs.

Nope, they weren't common enough back then to worry about. The drills we had were "hide under your desk in case of an earthquake, or nuclear attack." We also had fire drills where we would exit the building and stand in the designated area outside.

They called them Mr. Green drills because someone would get on the intercom and ask for Mr. Green to come to the office which was the code for us to lock the door and move to the far corner of the classroom.

I guess the idea was to not tip off the shooter but they eventually threw that idea away and they just became lockdown drills.

Seriously? Youre not shitting us? Im not doubting the drills, Ive heard about them all my life, I just wouldnt think thered be anyone old enough to participate in them around here. And from I heard, no one actually thought it would do any good, they just wanted to give kids something to do. For what purpose, I dont know.

Yup. In elementary school they would have us crawl under our desks and sit there. At the time I had no idea why we had to do it.

No, though I was accused of something when I was younger by the police/principal/vice principal. Was really fucked up too, some asshole wrote something on the boys bathroom wall, I don't even know what it was, but they sole focused me as the person who did it, despite cameras in the school recording me going home to my house for lunch. Still never got an apology for that.
