Isn't it basically just a simplified RTS? Maybe Starcraft/Warcraft/Command and Conquer/Age of Empires would be worth looking into.

The Kingdom Rush games are on PC

Yeah, but I like the whole idea of building an army of specific units and letting them attack a base where I have little to no involvement after the attack starts.

That being said, I am not looking for a game that plays itself, I do want to have the choice of what units attack and where from, but I want that choice to be mine.

Also I don't like games like Civ if that matters.

I'm not hugely familiar with it, so I don't know exactly how much involvement there is in the fights, but you might want to look into Hero's Hour. I believe the actual fights are mostly autobattling, but the stuff between them is HoMM-style setup and macro-strategy.

There's Emporea, which you can play for free but it is HELLA P2W
