Yes I got this new android phone a few days ago and it's much more up to date than my last. The previous phone had the speaker as the ear piece where you listen. But this phone has the speaker for sounds on the bottom of phone on right hand side. So now when I hold my phone horizontal to play games or such my hand blocks much of the speaker! So how exactly do you hold an Android phone horizontal without blocking the speaker? That I can't figure out. Thanks

@Makeveli_lives I do. I am using my new phone as a handheld gaming device on top of everything else it does. The quality of many games on mobile actually can match up to switch or vita games graphics

Presuming you have a case on it, there should be enough of a gap for sound to come out easily.

@Jiek_Fafn I don't have a case. That can't be the only solution. It would be very odd design choice for developers of phones to have a speaker which gets mostly blocked when held horizontal

Seems like you just gotta practice holding your phone in such a way that your hand isn't blocking the speaker.

Hold it the other way so the bottom faces out in the other direction.

@A_Good_Boy I guess could be true. Only had the phone a few days. But it's the one thing I'm trying to figure out how to get past. I am gonna use my phone for a handheld gaming device so I need to have good audio. Only option I had was to use headphones really

Especially without a controller. Preferably a PlayStation controller

Depending on the phone you can arch your fingers too I guess. Like place your finger tips on the top corner. This is easier with a case tbh though since it has better grip. My speaker is towards one side on the bottom so I naturally arch around it like im holding a standard controller

@rexcrk what do you mean? If I turn it one way or the other way the speaker is still very close to my hand and get partially or fully blocked. Especially during games where I'm trying to focus on the action and not continuously positioning my hand away from speaker

You just get used to it eventually. If the way you're holding the phone now isn't working then try flipping it horizontally from the other direction.

Also, quite a few games actually do recommend headphones... probably for the exact reason you're talking about.

@A_Good_Boy how is it for you when you hold your phone? Did you have to learn to somehow move the hand do it's not blocking speaker? I guess I'm just not used to a more out to date android. Mine before like I said had the speaker for sound coming out of the ear piece so it was never blocked no matter which way I held it

@Derwood if I play games while out I'll lower the volume down a lot if I don't have my headphones but I do bring my headphones on bus trips and such. Also I live by myself at home so I am not bothering anyone with sounds

I think it depends on the game, but either I'm able to hold the phone with my hand cupped around the speaker so it's not blocking it or I'll position my hands in such a way that the back of the phone is resting in my palms and that way my hands aren't covering the speaker either.

It really depends on the game for how you hold your phone because of their controls. If you're lucky then the game will allow you to configure the controls and you can try to make them more comfortable to your grip.

@Smashingpmkns hey yeah probably cupping it awkwardly has to be a start. Damn that is unfortunate. Actually one day I hope to be able to afford a pair of Bluetooth headphones that way the headphones not sticking out of the jack on top of phone. Yes my phone has a headphone jack haha. By the way how did you hold your phone now to avoid the speakers issue?

  1. Just turn the phone upside down. It should automatically rotate to the new orientation.
  2. If you can't do that for some reason, use a headset / earphones.

Thanks for all the replies though. It's quite odd but I guess since I'm new to this phone I will have to do the advices you all mention until I figure out the most comfortable way to play

I awkwardly cup it in my hands or I have it set flat while I use a Dualsense lol
