I saw someone getting dragged to their death and it was a bit shocking and gruesome and I was like...wait, this is on my iPad! This is not the kind of game I expect to play for free on a tablet. I keep looking around, thinking a cop will show up and arrest me for stealing this $60 game.

1. Max gems are nice, but that's not the only progression path. Even if you do pay $100k it would still take years of play to max paragons and gear. Compare to leveling to 99 in D2, it's not meant to be a realistic goal unless you are extremely dedicated, it's meant to be a way to rewars consistent grinding with a high cap.

2. Compared to other gacha, it's in line. There are some things that are better (very few "deals", despite the memes, most of progression has no way to p2w, little reason to spend after you get build gems) and some things that are worse (gems are a blanket increase, ranks on charms and gems really suck). But, again, you shouldn't try to "max out" because new gems and new content is going to come out and you'll definitely want the shiny new things.

Look, almost everyone repeating the "100k to max out your character" meme hasn't played the game to have context. It's just not something you need to do, it's not something you're supposed to do. You don't need to spend to do well in PvE or PvP, though there is an implicit paywall for ranking. The game is very fun on its own. I would rather pay $60 for a game not balanced around mtx, but that's just not realistic in the phone gaming market. Instead the game is free and the endgame feels more similar to D3 at release (or D2 Baal runs) than current D3.

Because it's fun? Idk I play phone games until they stop being enjoyable and then I move on to something else. I've never spent money on this stuff and I won't start with Diablo, but it seems like a pretty good game regardless

There is almost no advertisement in game, the bare minimum. AND you still have to spend 10 years grinding paragon levels and gear.
If you don't want to play it, don't, but you have no idea how it plays.

Honestly, if its going to take a literal decade of playing time I would rather the price tag be something insane rather than tempting.
