To be fair, I think trying to do Mario's signature stereotypical accent for an extended period of time would get annoying. It's perfect for short little quips.

Though I suppose they could've reached a middle ground.

Perhaps the middle ground would be making him only talk a little. Have the other characters around him talk most of the time and mario is silent other than saying a few lines like once every 15 minutes or something

I still stand by my suggestion; Mario should be a zanny weirdo that can't hold an actual conversation and doesn't typically talk coherently outside of his usual exclamations. Everyone around him just goes along with it.

CGI Sonic in the real world, Green Hill is an American town, Jim fucking Carrey as Robotnik... and it turned out good.
Perhaps Mario goes well as well.
