I really hope this bites them in November. There are a truly astonishing number of single issue voters who only care about abortion, and "vote for us so abortion stays illegal" just isn't as compelling a message as "vote for us to make abortion illegal."

I think their push to reverse RvW will backfire on them.

The anti-LGBT does okay enough with their base but it isn't near the motivator that it used to be to get single issue voters out to vote.

The amount of people who solely voted (R) to ban abortion is insane. Those people no longer have reasons to vote.

So we'll see how this shakes out for the GOP

It's never happened in any meaningful way. Maybe they have short term losses in the house and senate but they get them right back.

There is a world of difference between their base and the single issue voters that only ever cared about abortion.

It's like getting a band of mercenaries to actually join your military, sure some might but once the appeal (the pay in the mercs case) is gone, they have no reason to keep fighting (voting in the single issue voters case)

Well, we just have to go to another thing in line about what the bad guys will discriminate against. probably first up is LGBT, since that's the most recent "you can't discriminate against" group.

There's plenty of hate towards women to still be done, more explicit hatred of black people and other minorities, it never really moved past Jewish people, and if its really necessary, we can go way back and start hating like, Irish people.

Because they always had abortion to fall back on. Their biggest weapon just got expended.

I'm not predicting a massive blue wave but the impending red wave people thought would happen probably won't be as dramatic.

The GOP will win gains in the house and likely flip control of the Senate but if they don't use 2023 and 2024 wisely, their base will grow increasingly disillusioned and the elements they've invited into the party will cause a schism.

The problem is that most conservatives have proven to be spineless sycophants who only really care about their own self-interest. They fell in line behind Trump, once there's a real leader again (whether Trump runs again or its someone worse) they'll fall in line again.

The GOP base supports Trump, who embodies these peoples' supposed "values" less than maybe anyone else. 40 years ago they needed Reagan to put some sort of dignified face on all this, now they don't. They just don't care anymore and will do whatever it takes to preserve a racist theocracy.

Everyone said this exact same shit about the tea party, how they were "eating themselves" etc but it just ended up successfully dragging the already far-right wing party even further right.

And what happened since the tea party? A Republican president who lost the popular vote who couldn't do much anything WITH the trifecta he had, increasingly radical elements in the GOP that threaten to schism the party into violent sections that will spend more time fighting each other than the left.

What we're seeing is the death throes of an ideology that is kicking out harder and harder as the world moves forward

The GOP completely fell in line behind Trump. The people who stood out like Romney and McCain were largely fought against by the rest of the GOP. The second they decide a new leader (whether it be Trump or someone who's actually drank the Kool aid) they'll fall in line.

Since the Tea Party, we've had a tyrannical despot praise make every darkest dream on most republicans public knowledge, and for the most part nobody cared. He then proceeded to get the 2nd most votes of any president in history, and the entire party (which was already far-right) has completely shifted behind him into damn near calling for a fascist takeover.

We aren't in the death throes of an ideology trying to stay relevant, they're winning and dragging the world backwards kicking and screaming.
