You can tell I don't know a whole lot about politics. I think what is especially disgusting to me about it is that it's not just Hillary but the way the author frames the issue in such a way to deliberately throw trans people under the bus to win elections, it is becoming a distressingly more frequent take amongst political pundits. Thankfully I don't think it has totally infected the party but it's something to be real vigilant for because many Democrats are cowards. I went to a rally for local Democrats yesterday and to my surprise it was not simply a "just vote" thing but they had partnered with other local orgs that could stress that's only one step and be a bit more explicit in their language. Lots of explicit support for trans lives and how that and other issues connect to abortion rights. The turnout wasn't massive but it's the kind of organizing Democrats should have been doing all along, and better late than never I guess. So if I sound bitter over electoral quibbles it's because the most important thing people can do imo is to help build up these local orgs and unions that are doing the work to help people right now, and hopefully leverage that into electoral strength later. They don't give a shit about anyone but themselves, and they will in fact go out of their way to attack and punish those who don't fit their world view. Women? Minorities? LGBTQ+ people? Fuck 'em, let's pass laws to make it so life is harder for those people. But the left wing has a similar problem, albeit nowhere near as severe. For a lot of women in the Democratic Party, yes, they are pro-choice; yes they will go out in massive marches on Washington to protest; yes they will donate to Planned Parenthood and the ACLU. BUT, for a lot of those women, the idea of Roe vs. Wade is more of a concept, rather than a concrete fact of their existence. Middle class white women (I know we don't want to make it a race thing, but it has to be acknowledged that a LARGE chunk of the Democratic Party--which is the chunk that goes out and votes in primaries and then reliably turns in in general/midterm elections--is the white middle class who are LARGELY unaffected by the GOP's culture war bullshit) are fine with supporting pro-choice in the abstract, but if it happened to go away (as the Supreme Court just decided), in their minds, it's not something that directly impacts THEIR lives. For them, THEY are never going to be in a position where they NEED an abortion, so while they might feel bad for women who do, it's not the end of THEIR world. It's not the kind of issue that will convert them into single-issue Democratic voters. It's the same reason why Defund the Police failed spectacularly. Watching protests and seeing police brutality live on-screen may have upset this voting bloc, but ultimately, it's easy for them to say "something needs to change"...right up until that change is something that might affect them. "The police are using extremely force against unarmed black men and peaceful protesters. We need to reform the police!" "Well how about we defund them, since they have too much of a budget and absolutely don't need it?" "Absolutely not. If you defund the police, then they might not have the money to come protect me if a criminal breaks into my house. This sounds scary, and at least the GOP doesn't want to make me less safe, so maybe I should consider voting for them, or just not voting since both sides are bad." Or Medicare-for-All. Yes, they nominally agree that everyone should have access to healthcare, since only a monster would think otherwise. But when you come up with a solution that would allow this, suddenly that mindset changes. "Wait, you want to increase MY taxes to pay for this? But I already have good insurance, and I don't want you to take away my insurance to put me on some government plan. This is unfair and I don't want to vote for the party in favor of it." It's the same thing, over and over and over again. That white, middle class moderate majority of the Democratic party is more than happy to support things in the abstract, right up until it becomes an inconvenience to them, personally. Either monetarily in the form of taxes, or even (and this is from personal experience with moderate Democrats in my life) people who get upset about "having to change their views" when it comes to CRT, or Potatohead, or Dr. Seuss, or whatever social cause is making a lot of noise in the right-wing mediasphere. And this self-centered attitude, where they cannot accept minor inconveniences that might tremendous uplift others, ultimately leads to the GOP taking power and imposing their social conservative views on a population that doesn't want it, and suffers for it. --- Touch fuzzy.
