Admittedly, I haven't kept up with the sequels. But the Ryu of Street Fighter II is the ideal student of karate who lives only for training. He's based off of Mas Oyama who actively left society for a year to train in the mountains.

Even his ending is just him abandoning the award ceremony to go train beneath a waterfall.

I get Ryu's whole deal, but that doesn't stop him from being a super static, two-dimensional character.

Even Ken and Chun-Li showed some growth throughout the series that goes beyond just "I want to be a stronger fighter!"

Well, there you go. If Ryu has had character development over the course of the series, and E. Honda has remained in "Japan Number One" mode, I can see how the latter would retroactively have the least personality of anyone in Street Fighter II. Since I never got into the further sequels, all I have to measure personality by is what's in that first game.

If you look at Mario and Pac-Man in 1982, Mario is a blue-collar worker out to rescue his girlfriend and Pac-Man is a hungry mouth that makes a pitiful sound when he dies.

If you look at Mario and Pac-Man in 2022, Mario is a pop culture icon with a happy-go-lucky personality and Pac-Man is a hungry mouth that makes a pitiful sound when he dies.

It's real hard to make a rikishi interesting, since even irl, their whole lives are literally 24/7 Sumo until they retire. Even their fucking wedding gifts partially go to their stablemaster.

Also they kinda have to make the sumo guy boring. There have been numerous scandals in the sumo community that have shook Japan and subsequently been swept under the rug.

The traditional and conservative side would not like it if they tried to do something different with Honda.

I legitimately thought that Vega was a shirtless, flat-chested woman. So I get the ball sack thing. I think a part of me questioned if the red part was his clothing or him until I saw the alternate skin of the character where it's a little more evident that it's clothing.

With Vega, Balrog, Sagat, and M. Bison also there as unplayable bosses.

Of the original 8, I'd say it's between Honda & Zangief. If you want to count bosses, then throw in Balrog.

If you want to count the added characters, then all 3 of them other than Cammy.

I'd put Zangief, Honda and Dhalsim all on the same tier of memorable tbh. Maybe even Guile and Blanka as well.

It's hard to define because all 8 of them are pretty iconic at this point. Isn't Honda one of the first fights in Arcade mode most of the time? I think because of that he would be the first one to list after Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li for me because I associate fighting him early in SFII so he easily comes to mind lol

in terms of bosses, Dictator > boxer > Sagat > claw. Claw is a jobber, and if dictator wasn't so iconic I'd put boxer above him, because boxer is a badass character.

I never really cared for Vega much, but he did have aspects about him that made him unique -- like the ability to climb around in that one stage, or the fact that his mask and claw falls off if he takes enough damage and he has to retrieve them.

Other than that, Vega was always meh to me. Still a more memorable character than Honda though.

I'd say he's the least popular out of the 8 original WW. He was the only one not to be playable in SFXT. In fact he's had the fewest crossover appearances. He's also the only that's never been playable in the EX games.

Well shit, there you go. At this point, Juri is more of a series mainstay than he is.

I really hope they beef him up in 6. You could make him into a defensive monster with lots of low strikes that get under projectiles.

Most interesting I can think of is the MC from the manga/anime hinomaru sumo since his whole thing is being a really small sized guy compared to all his competition yet he hung in there and learned to throw'em around. A undersized sumo guy like this wouldn't be too far-fetched in the street fighter world since those guys is already throwing around fireballs, learning to spit fire and can teleport already.

Also, he hooked up with a hot lady that is a good bit taller than him and that is cool man.

Dhalsim is by far the SFII character that I forget about the most. Balrog, however, is the most forgettable if we count the boss characters.

I really like those old, silly Udon comics. It might not seem like much, but them leaning on things like that gives him so much more depth as a character than what you'd gather from the games.
