My computer hard crashed during a game and rebooted, but wouldn't boot past the BIOS until I set the RAM from 3600 to 3200Mhz. I've had one blue screen error in the past that I think was caused by the RAM running at 3600Mhz, but that was over a year ago and it's worked perfectly fine since then. I'm a bit confused why this happened.

RAM is 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance, if that matters.

have you done the basic diagnostics? Like, open an app like speccy while you're playing games and see what temperature you get up to?

If you're pushing much past like, 175F it's probably gonna crash.

I had actually checked MSI Afterburner immediately before the crash. The GPU was running at 75C, and the CPU was around 70, so it's not an overheating issue.

I did notice at one point yesterday that the CPU temp had gone to 83C at one point while playing, but it didn't stay there for long. That's a little high, but I don't think the Ryzen 5 3600 starts thermal throttling until 95 or something like that.

It might be flaring up or just damaged from previously overheating along with wear?

I did some tests on the RAM and CPU, and it doesn't seem like either of those has a problem. I'm wondering if it's a power supply issue, then.

Did you do any oc'ing beforehand? Or change any voltages to the ram?

Was the game running on one of the Unreal engines? Those will BSOD your computer now and then.

Thats weird. My pc just crashed on Overwatch. Fucking Overwatch. My screen went black and my GPU started making a weird noise. I thought it was a hardware failure, but after restarting the PC is running fine and playing other games. But Overwatch has killed my GPU twice now. Im currently updating drivers and scan/repairing the game.

I had used the XMP profile to set the RAM to 3600Mhz, but I didn't make any manual changes to the timings or the voltage. I don't bother with overclocking the CPU or GPU.

Unreal Engine 4. It didn't actually BSOD, though, it just froze for a few seconds and rebooted.

freezing into a reboot sounds like thermal shutdown

That's the thing, though, the temperatures were fine. It doesn't seem to me like it was a heating issue.

Wait... does it only crash when you set the speed to 3600? Or has it been running at 3600 for an entire year?

If it's stable at 3200, but crashing at 3600, then it could be the XMP settings, or it could just be that the sticks are in the wrong slots...

PSU is giving out, or some thermal paste somewhere has decayed.

I built it in December 2020, so it's been a year and a half. I got a BSOD a couple weeks after building it that I never figured out the cause of. I suspected it might have been the RAM, but it ran completely fine after that. That was the only actual BSOD I've gotten.
