of course he didnt, the most he did was just complain about his employer on gamefaqs, its easier and cheaper to do that than to buy someone celebrating their 50th year at the company

I don't know him all that well but would have went to a dinner or something. I mostly see him in the morning when he signs out his keys.

Imagine working at the same place for 50 years though. Imagine working period for 50 years. Dude never calls out sick either. I would blame it on a bad home life but his wife died and nothing changed so it's just dedication I guess

Wow. That's pretty crappy. My company does a lot for our long time employees. We currently have 4 that have been here more than 40 years. Our retirees are taken our to lunches with every department, thrown a big party, and they get plenty of gifts. They also get a free turkey for thanksgiving and ham for christmas for the rest of their lives. The owner will typically try to talk employees into retiring at the beginning of the new year so they can use their 8 weeks vacation and be covered under the company's insurance for an extra year.

I've noticed at several places I've worked at, some departments stand out a little more and some are neglected (regardless of how good the enployees are at their work).
The same applies at where I work right now, where the caterers are basically the bottom of the social hierarchy. Whenever someone has a anniversary or quits, most of the company won't even notice, but their colleagues/people they hang out with generally throw a party/gathering for them (unless the person in question made it clear they don't want that).

So if the company won't do it, there's nothing stopping co-workers from arranging a get-together on their own, whether it's at work (if the company doesn't mind) or at a nearby restaurant/bar.

Agreed. Same way. They usually pass cards around for everyone to sign for Birthdays. Sometimes they will have a little party for accomplishments. I have made it 100 percent clear I don't want these. I don't want the attention. Every year everyone in the office gets them but me and I am okay with that.
