The idea of there being a life after death is completely at odds with what we know about the universe and the way life works. There is no evidence for a source of consciousness beyond our physical brains. Everything about a person you can think of--memory, taste, smell, perceiving the passage of time, morality, personality, sexual orientation--can be changed by damaging the brain. Death is the ultimate form of brain damage---every part of your brain stops working when you die.

So...from a "spiritual" point of view, what happens then? Some indeterminate amount of time after death, you discover that you were actually an invisible, undetectable thing called a soul all along, and that your perceptions, memories, personality traits and all that stuff were somehow being influenced or controlled by your link (just how are the soul and body connected, anyway?) to fleshy human body. And then you get carried away by some unseen being to some other kind of realm--which seems to have no detectable basis in reality--for some reason.

It just doesn't make any sense, and there is no evidence to support it. There have been limited experiments to test things like people having out of body experiences and seeing things they shouldn't have been able to. The results were negative. Near death experiences are conflicting, and I've never heard of even a single one where someone brought back real, objective knowledge about our world from "the other side". Plenty of people experience absolutely nothing when they are near death. I got blasted with a "life review" after a particularly strong--but nowhere near fatal--allergic reaction. The presence people sometimes report seeing makes sense too, as humans in serious survival situations have reported sometimes having an imaginary "other" with them who encourages them and helps them to survive.

The one form of afterlife that would make sense is that our entire reality is a simulation, and we are all participants who have agreed to forego knowledge of our actual lives during our time here. It doesn't quite fit, though. If you are from a civilization so advanced as to be able to simulate a universe, why should you want to experience 50 years subjective time as medieval peasant? Or even a medieval king, for that matter? You could just wave that away by saying your real self has some kind of motive that we can't think of right now (or maybe are forbidden from thinking of by the simulation) that will make sense when you wake up.

But yeah, I think it's safe to say everyone gets the 'ol dirt nap.

The problem I've always had with this theory is it just kicks the can down the road. No questions are answered. Just pushed to the next level of reality.
