According to BoxOfficeMojo, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero had made $12,121,600 US in the first 3 weeks. Compared to Super Hero film, the previous 3 films each made more than $20 million in their first 3 opening weeks.

I am fairly certain that nearly 100% of the difference in box office draws has to do with the CGI animation decision.

Highly doubt the number would change drastically if it was made in Broly graphics.

I think it would. Broly wasn't traditional DBZ animation either, but it was still drawn. I don't think the retread of an old story or the focus on Gohan and Piccolo over Goku and Vegeta are enough to turn away most typical Dragonball fans, but a major animation change is going to cause a drop in performance almost no matter what franchise does it. Anime fans in general aren't exactly known for being receptive to that kind of change.

To be honest, this movie had terrible advertising compared to the other super movies.

Hell, unlike the former 2 it didn't even have a kickass theme songs. And while the action was great there wasn't much of it in the trailers.

You think so? Last Broly trailer literally spoiled Gogeta for us and the movie did the best.

How's the movie being received in general? All the enthusiasm I see comes from people who're happy one of their characters has been revealed to be stronger than another.

Big Orange, Gohan Blanco and Cell Max don't really interest me on the whole.

Catering to Gohan fans was a mistake. Hopefully Toriyama learned his lesson.

It probably got bad word of mouth because it sucks. I'm not even talking about the animation either, it's bland and comes off as a bad fanfic.

My guess is it has to do with the villains rather than the protagonists:

Battle of Gods = First DBZ movie in decades, it was gonna do well
Resurrection F = Brings back Freeza, arguably to best villain in the series
Broly = Brings back Broly, the most well known villain from prior movies
Super Hero = I dont even know who the fuck the villain is

To be fair, the other movies came out before the pandemic. Going to the actual theater to see a movie has to be down in general. Im a huge movie lover and I havent been to one since the pandemic began just cause it has never been the right time.

I'd imagine the biggest thing is that none of the featured characters were particularly compelling in terms of making people interested. If they had shown the actual final villain, that might have hyped people up more. Though they would have been disappointed upon seeing he's a literal mindless beast, but it still would have been better than two new androids I doubt anyone will remember in 3 years.
