I dunno does he have a personality beyond stock Shonen protagonist?

I liked him when he was the underdog, but like most shonen protagonists, he ended up being the chosen one and became boring to me.

Yeah. I like my protagonists with a bit of an edge to them, without going overboard.

Bleach is one of those shonen where I like the entirety of the side cast more than the main himself. Ichigo isn't "bad" bad, just way less interesting compared to people like yoruichi, urahara, renji, rukia, ishida, kenpachi, yumichika, even chad, etc. etc. lol.

He was always cool.

The thing I always loved about Bleach is they leaned into the story trope of the ass pull. It was pioneered by DBZ but if your not watching Bleach to see who can out bullshit the other in a duel then why are watching or hopefully reading.

The thousand year blood war arc is actually fantastic. But it is stupid over the top ridiculous in terms of power levels. And thats the point.

Adult Nelliel definitely demonstrates traits I would like in a girlfriend.

I like his attitude, but he's definitely one of the more boring shonen protagonists.

I feel like people caulk Ichigo Boring because he never had a dream like naruto or luffy.

They had goals that caused them to push forward, Ichigo just wanted to save his friends.

orihime and chad should have gotten more fights
especially orihime cause her powers opened up so much room to experiment with

she has 6 fairies she can combine to create different shields
one shield rejects injuries and turns a person back to how they were before as if the injury never happened making this ability the strongest healing move in the anime. it takes 2 of her fairies

another shield rejects the reality of an attack ever landing on her creating an unbreakable shield so long as she believes its unbreakable. her powers are tied to her will so if she thinks she can heal someone she can pretty much bring them back from the dead. if she thinks she cant then she wont be able to.
so long as she believes nothing can break the shield its the ultimate defense but if her will falters it can be shattered. 3 of her fairies make this shield

her last move basically rejects her opponents very existence and insta kills them.
so long as she wants someone dead she can kill anyone. but this is her worst move as she doesnt want to see anyone hurt not even her enemies so whenever she uses this attack it fails

anyway i always pictured her as creating new moves by changing which fairies she used which does happen one time where she adds tsubaki to her defensive shield creating final fantasies reflect spell and bouncing damage that would have been inflicted on her to her enemy

but thats all. there was so much potential there that was left unused

Ichigo also secretly loves fighting and using saving his friends as an excuse - both Kenpachi and Grimmjow call him out on this.

I always felt like he was the Jerry Seinfeld of bleach. It's about him, and everyone more or less interacts with him at some point, most of not all the major plot points are tied to him in some way. He was not always the strongest character too which was nice, yeah he got some major asspulls throughout but overall he's never been top 1/2 or even top 5 at various points, which is something nice to see in general. The side characters, much like Seinfeld are much more interesting.

Budget Yusuke

He's got some of the hypest hype moments in all of anime/manga history, and his personality isn't as obnoxious as somebody like Luffy or Naruto. I think he's one of the best shonen protagonists, even though his powers are basically explained as him being a hybrid of literally every other major faction in the series combined into one.

That said, he's not the best character in his own series. Aizen is.

It'd be just as ridiculous if naruto had discovered his mom was a uchiha, he can summon insects and use shadow binding techniques and oh he also has a byakugan and upon getting six paths he also gets the rinnegan. Makes no god damn sense.

Consistently high up in his school rankings and he's an English translator running out of his dad's clinic as an adult. I think it's implied he's also doing stuff for the clinic as well.

Pretty sure the school ranking thing is even a minor plot point where it's mentioned people assume he's a delinquent because of his hair but he's quite intelligent and still ranking high even when missing school due to shinigami stuff.

Ichigo did marry Orihime & she gave birth to a son.

So it works out in the end.

It makes complete sense in context though. People always give this bit grief but it all adds up once we know the full story. Hollow and fullbringer also kind of overlap anyway.

one thing i really liked about bleach was ichigo and rukias friendship
they are each others best friends and it never turns romantic. both have different love interests and even in the 10 year later epilogue both still seem super close to one another

male/female friendships that stay friendships and dont turn romantic are really rare in fiction
especially japanese fiction where they still have very rigid gender roles where even if both husband and wife work full time the wife is still expected to do all the housework.

hell the reason that all the female social links in the game persona 3 turn romantic is because the head writer of the game didnt think men and women could be friends

I don't dislike him I guess. So more of than not of. But also he's not super amazing. When a shonen has a guy who can show up and hit a bad guy who is a jerk though in a classic shonen moment I can't hate the guy though, I'm still a sucker for seeing a bad guy who is asking for it get hit really hard by a hero entrance.

Yes, though I'm more of a Naruto fan.

By the end im much less interested in him but he still has his hype moments. There are some much cooler characters in the ensemble that I prefer.

The first episode he was a human and became a soul reaper. Then in SS arc he was a soul reaper that became a hollow. This theme was present from day 1. I dont get how people complain about that. It was always a thing.

Anyway, Ichigo was awesome. The only thing I disliked was how up and down his powers were.

Kenpachi was the best Bleach character.

^this, to the point that I'm convinced it's pretty much intentional. Since the author really can write awesome characters if he wants.

And it's not just his character but his fighting style as well. He has only one ability for the entire series, no special abilitys in his Benkai and isn't much of a creative fighter or strategist either.

Which generally makes most of Ichigos fight the most boring in the series.

This. It seems like Kubo just using him as a way to get the viewer/reader invested into the deeper, more fleshed out world and characters he created.
