https://blog.youtube/creator-and-artist-stories/10-years-of-youtubes-billion-views-club-psy-gangnam-style/

On July 15, 2012, music video history was forever changed as Psys Gangnam Style video made its unforgettable debut on YouTube. Psy immediately took the world by storm, with viewers around the globe flocking to YouTube to experience and share the viral sensation. Less than six months later on December 21, 2012, the game-changing video would go on to earn the honor of the first music video ever to hit one billion views on the platform, establishing YouTubes Billion Views Club (BVC).

With over 4.4 billion views on the video to date, Psy demonstrated the immense power that music videos on YouTube have in connecting artists with their fans around the world, while inspiring others to reach record breaking milestones of their own.

As YouTubes BVC turns 10, we look back on these and many other unforgettable music videos that have made their place in history as part of the club; including a genre- and generation-spanning collection of some of the most memorable music videos ever made. The elusive list features the likes of Luis Fonsis record-breaking sensation Despacito ft. Daddy Yankee, BLACKPINKs How You Like That, Drakes Hotline Bling, a-has Take On Me, Shakiras Waka Waka (This Time for Africa), Wiz Khalifas See You Again ft. Charlie Puth, Katy Perrys Roar, Cardi Bs Bodak Yellow, Metallicas Nothing Else Matters, Mark Ronsons Uptown Funk (Official Video) ft. Bruno Mars, Billie Eilishs Bad Guy, and the clubs most recent entry with BVC first-timer Coolio for his 90s hit Gangstas Paradise.

J Balvin and Justin Bieber are tied for the most billion views entries as a lead, featured artist or collaborator, with 11 official music videos each, Adeles Hello is the fastest entry into the Billion Views Club, reaching the milestone in just 88 days, and Guns N Roses defy decades with the first billion-view music video from both the 80s (Sweet Child O Mine) and 90s (November Rain). And despite being nearly a decade-running, the achievement continues to be a distinguished milestone celebrated by artists, industry and fans alike.

The Billion Views Club represents the diverse mix of global sounds and voices that have helped make YouTube the home of music," YouTube Music Trends Manager Kevin Meenan says. "The list serves as a reminder of the power of the visual pairing with a great song, with the music video alongside features like Premieres and Shorts -- serving as the ultimate way for artists to share their art and vision directly with fans."

I'm scrolling through, skipping stuff I already am familiar with or absolutely dislike, at like song 80 right now and this shit is such a drag. A handful of songs I never heard before but actually ended up liking, and SO. MUCH. FUCKING. LATIN AMERICA BULLSHIT. It's driving me near insane.

I still remember this. I remember in 2012 going "why is this random video garnering a billion views?" 10 years later and I still haven't found the answer. Maybe all the views were from India and/or China, in which case a small fraction of their population could have accounted for 90% of the 1 billion views?

Which one I think I've only listened to two so far. It's catchy and he has a great voice IMO. Not familiar with him or the rest of his work at all though.

Why is it shitty? It's a catchy pop ballad, not too shabby.

I also like uptown funk, that's a great song I really liked.

However I don't like the no. 1 song on that list despacito. Just listened to it and it's awful, not my cup of tea at all. Neither is no. 3

First time in my life ever listening to Despacito, arguably the biggest song in the world ever. Only thing I got from it was that Daddy Yankee looks the exact same as when I last saw him on a screen almost 20 years ago.

I have a theory that most of these plays come from store managers at malls hooking up their phones and playing music from YouTube through the speakers in their stores. Just Generic EDM Pop playing for 12 hours a day. Do people in the club really dance to Calvin Harris and The Chainsmokers?

Also nobody else is talking about how much fucking Latin American stuff there is. Are they just not doing the population census correctly down there? And there's literally a billion people that are unaccounted for who just listen to music on YouTube all day? How popular is Spotify and Apple Music outside of the US?

All these American Pop Songs just fall off at around the 1:30 mark, right after the peak of hearing that chorus for the first time. It's literally formulated songwriting.

Why wouldn't it? It's a very deep song. You see, on the surface it just comes off as a regular goofy hip hop song. But actually under the surface Im bullshitting and it's literal trash.

Was it on Fortnite or something? And all the kids gravitated towards it? I don't remember it being that huge in the real world as an adult in my early 20s around the time it came out. Never thought I'd see Desto Dub making a cameo in a 1B+ views YouTube video.

Some other Rap songs that surprised me were Future & Drake "Life Is Good" and Cardi B "Bodak Yellow"

Burned through that god-forsaken playlist finally. Can't believe Future, 21 Savage, and Young Thug snuck their way into the BVC. Had to listen to 6ix9ine not once but twice. Nicki Minaj was in there more times than I would expect. System of a Down, Evanescence, and Linkin Park TWICE put a smile on my face and I gladly sat through the entire video for those. Expected all the Blackpink and BTS.

These fucking Latin American artists man, they must have streaming farms or something.
