John works hard and, having begun his career at 25 years old, is now eligible to retire from his company at the age of 50. The average biweekly deduction over the course of his career was $175 or $4550 per year. After 25 years this totals $113,750 that John has had deducted for his pension. Now retired, his monthly pension disbursement totals $2,916.67 or $35,000 per year after taxes. This means it takes John a mere 3 and 1/4 years to receive back all of the contributions he's made to his pension. At 53 years old, John's pension has paid back his investment and now makes him a steady source of income.

His pension is a lifetime benefit, and John believes in taking care of himself. He exercises daily and eats well. John lives to be 80 years old. After 27 years of monthly payments that made him money, his pension has paid him $945,000 only with an investment of $113,750.

Let John be an example: the path to wealth is a marathon my friends, not a race.

Meanwhile Freds employer invested his pension in a private hedge fund that turned out to be a Ponzi scheme run by the CFOs nephew, who fled the country following the discovery of his embezzling, leaving Fred flat broke and with no recourse.

Sounds good, but see, right now that 175 being taken out of every paycheck would mean rent isn't getting paid or that I can't afford to eat.

Pension will be a thing of the past by the time most people here will be able to access it. They've steadily increased the eligible age here (NZ) by like 10 years during my lifetime already lul.

We have this scheme called KiwiSaver which is basically the OP (contribute some of your wages to an account you can't access till you are 65) but a LOT of dumb people refuse to contribute even 2% of their wages because "muh money". They're gonna be fucked when pension is gone and govt says "Should've invested in Kiwisaver lmao"

Why don't you stop blaming boomers and start uniting the proletariat to cast off the shackles of capitalism?

Are there companies still offering pensions? Dont they switched all to 401k?

Also even if it hurts, I contribute for the full match at 6%. Rather have less expendable money and multiply it for later on. Though I understand how its hard for most people to even contribute since every dollar xounts, specially today.

Pennsylvania offers pensions for their liquor store employees, as they are gov't run. It IS gov't, but it's regular retail for the most part.

There are some exceptions for position and living area, but a lot of those people don't get to live life during their working years cause those positions pay shit. Need to be with someone who makes good money in the present while you get the pension benefit in retirement.
