For those who don't know, Frost Giant studios is making a new RTS! Frost Giant studios is made up of former Blizzard developers who for several reasons left the company at different times in the last few years. They are making a new RTS, which seems that thematically is a combination of Starcraft and Diablo.

Are you excited? Is this gonna dethrone Starcraft II as the best competitive RTS of all time (fight me on this)? Or is the RTS genre dead as a whole?

I went to the site and signed up for eventual beta access. I played a ton of Starcraft: BW and SC2 with my brother.

I think these are both too far to opposite extremes.

I think the era of 1v1 RTS as a really big thing is just sort of finished. I don't think the genre is totally dead or anything especially with stuff like SC2 co-op mode being very popular and AoE2 adding co-op campaigns recently and stuff. But I just don't think the playerbase is there for stuff like the starcraft/warcraft of old

and it's hard to have a game be a big competitive hit if it doesn't have the casual playerbase as a foundation

When was it biggest? I honestly don't know. Was peak SC:BW actually bigger than peak SC II? Did anything else come even close?

No genre ever dies

People thought point and click adventure games died during the early 2000s

Now they are what saturates the market with walking sims

As someone who grew up playing the competitors to blizzard games (Command and Conquer over war/starcraft, Eve Online over wow, Torchlight over diablo, ect..), I never understood the love they got from people. I always held the opinion they were massively overrated and got undeserve praise for their games.

All about the map editor tbh.

Which greedy Activision now owns the rights to any map you make in wc3 and would never make a modern map editor.

That's like saying Bethesda is great because you can mod skyrim easily.

Warcraft 2 and Starcraft were the apex. War 3 stared the downslide and Starcraft 2 wasn't very good either.

That being said - I'm glad to see some of the creators left the shell of a company that is Blizzard.

I mean the base games were also good but combine both put it over the top.
Endless hours of fun during the heyday.

ALSO
Starcraft allowed a light install so you could play with friends who didn't own a copy.

You could literally lan party with 1 copy.

Yeah war 3 reduced army size and made heroes too strong.

Was no longer about 350 zerglings versus 150 marines and such other hilarity (I know that is not how to play but is fun)

But dota and league of legends exist because of war 3

if an RTS doesn't have Chris Taylor's name on it, I'm not interested.
