The community was quick to condemn Hungrybox and things are no different this time around. The response to the news about his ban has mostly been met with approval. While some have been condemning his behavior at Double Down, others have been describing the move as a means of setting a positive example going forward. The overall feeling seems to be that more care needs to be taken at tournaments during what continues to be a deadly pandemic.

But they rightfully called him out and are taking steps to prevent this from happening again.

It was really dumb but afaik there's no notable events for melee in st Louis so this is meaningless

You can't expect everyone with cold-like symptoms to stay home or wear a mask forever. We are rapidly returning to the point where if you feel a little under the weather you pop a Tylenol and go about your day.

Coughing blood is probably past the point where you either rest at home or see a doctor though.

Reading the article, looks like it he coughed up blood in the morning before the event. At least he was stupid enough to tweet about it. If he hadn't, we might never have known.

They finally need to clamp down on the enabling behavior. Like just cause you can play an aging Nintendo game doesnt give you the right to be obtuse socially. Its not that hard to just be civil, but for most of the smash community you might as well be asking them the impossible.

The rest of the FGC isnt much better at times either, which is why Smash being so egregious is saying something. They dont even self police sometimes. This instance being more of an exception where people didnt defend the heinous behavior.

And thats not even opening the can of worms that are the mega creeps that roll in those circles.

Dunno why the community tolerated this behavior at all, and I don't know why the dude pushed himself as hard as he did for the 1k+ smash tournament he's participated in.

Was he desperate for the prize money or something?

Interesting caveat is that he wasn't sick (apparently?) until Sunday finals, where he played a set maskless then DQ'd and left the venue after a lot of public pressure. His reasoning for playing maskless was, and this is real, that it made it too hard to breath on top of his other symptoms.

Kind of nutty this happened considering how good the scene has been regarding masks

Since people dont know the full context.

1. He wasnt sick on Day 1 of the tournament, so they had no reason to turn him away that day, it was only the last day.
2. The TOs werent really made aware of the extent of what Hungrybox had been going through, I believe they knew he wasnt positive for COVID, and thats about it.

So basically, to blame it on the TOs or the Smash community isnt fair, it was a Hungrybox thing. Whether you think his apology is sufficient is your own business.

I never got any impression that Hbox was MAGA. He did think mask rules never applied to him before this incident, but thats more a top player privilege thing coming into play Ive seen accounts of him being told to put on a mask by event organizers and ripping it off after they leave.

Just got over Covid and was watching for this. I had it in January and this was a sign for me that it turned to Pneumonia. Have coughed up blood a few times in my life, and each time it was Pneumonia.

the issue is that one of the most well known players even being this fucking dumb in the first place makes anyone who plays the game at all look bad

Melee is usually pretty good about covid precautions, much better than the general public.
