Study Finds Video Games With Sexualized Content Do Not Cause Misogynistic Attitudes Or Body Image Issues

"According to the results of a recent study, psychologists have found that the evidence is weak that sexualized games influence player attitudes and behavior.

Okay good, let's make western games sexy again and stop trying to censor Japanese games, *cough*Sony*cough*

Most normal people already knew this >_>

Most of the normal women I've talked to actually prefer the "sexy" outfits on women instead of the covered up puritan look. People in general like to look at attractive people. It's usually just the self-loathing weird chicks or dorky white knight dudes with no experience with the opposite sex that want other chicks covered up.

I'm gonna have to call the study into question. There have been multiple studies into how Social Media, print media, movies, etc have all have negative side effects on body image when it's overly sexualized.

Now all of a sudden video games are the exception lol

Self perception and attitudes towards others are different effects, though. This study said it doesn't make someone sexist, not that it had no effect on body image.

Fair point. I guess it'll probably come down to sample size and experimental design, but I also wouldn't write off a study entirely just because it doesn't agree with prior results. That's just of how science works.

It says both. But as for body image issues. idk I ain't a psychologist lol. My unprofessional armchair opinion is that it probably stems from low self esteem or confidence, whether directly from body image, or from some other personal issue a person has and body image insecurity is just a symptom of that underlying issue.

I ain't in the best shape but I see buff dudes all the time and it doesn't depress me. It just sorta motivates me to want to work out more and improve myself; not blame society and request fat dudes be in games just because I'm 20lbs overweight or something lol. I'd rather see buff hot dudes >_>

Hence why I think body image insecurities are from underlying personal issues that are really unrelated to the media, in my unprofessional opinion.

Men havent been told for years that their worth is tied to their looks then bombarded with unobtainable body standards in the media.

Hell, in the OAN topic you literally went in there while people were discussing the woman's terrible views on LGBTQ people to say that she has nice cleavage.

I wouldnt trust your judgement on anything related to body image issues or the sexualization of women in the media.

A) Would you say people who aren't "self-loathing weird chicks or dorky white knight dudes with no experience with the opposite sex" but still want better/less sexualized representation should just be ignored then?
B) The author of the study itself advocates for this, do you believe his opinion is wrong?

Again, to be fair, advocating for better representation of females in games can be a worthy cause even if the games dont cause harmful effects, he concluded. I support those efforts, just hope advocates dont misrepresent the evidence as a part of their efforts (which, unfortunately, is all too common among advocacy groups).

C) I'd say your perception of what "normal women I've talked" have said likely has some selective memory, given that you were upset about female Olympic uniforms being less revealing.

I think missed I4n's point - that your tendency to focus on breasts at the exception of a lot of other things makes your "judgement on anything related to body image issues or the sexualization of women in the media" a bit suspect.

To add to this, your use of your own life to "prove" how people can't be affected by seeing ideal bodies makes your logic process a bit suspect.

I mean it's pretty obvious it doesn't create a misogynistic person, but no effect on body issues? The fact that plastic surgery demands is at its highest for young people says otherwise. More Gen Z'ers are getting plastic surgery than any other generation because of social medias like Tik Tok and Instagram that glorify that shit.

So I agree that it doesn't make a person sexist, but it absolutely has SOME effects on body image issues. And this is directed at both male and females.

This article also talks about peer review papers showing there's no correlation to video games causing violence, when it reality it does have some correlation but the effect on emotions is always temporary for the average person. The person might feel frustrated (and we've seen a lot of compilation of people raging when playing video games) but it's never a long lasting effect. It eventually goes away.

There are multiple degrees of separation between seeing peers do something on social media and seeing a buxom character in a video game. For a start the game is obvious fiction; and that's already glossing over the difference in seeing perceived peers do something on social media.

To look at it a bit further, look at the difference in how female characters are presented in video games made in the West, all the fuss that was and is made over representation, and how the men continue to be sculptured masses of muscle without nary a peep to be heard. Now, you can point to physical appearance being stressed more on girls in society, but it is quite the leap to go from 'your peers will judge you in real life' to 'seeing attractive female characters in video games harms the psyche of girls'.

In order for that argument to really hold any sway it would be necessary for people to be unable to distinguish between the clear fantasy of a video game and the reality around them. It's the same way that people tried to claim that video games were 'murder simulators' only to be laughed out of the room. Picking up a keyboard and mouse doesn't turn you into a killing machine. In the same way seeing a clearly fictional virtual woman in hot pants isn't going to cause brains to implode.

Okay I'll take the L here because for some reason I was equating social media such as tik tok and instagram to video games when it comes to body image issues. Even the peer review papers that stated body image issues didn't make this claim.

Thing is I see these "unrealistic body types" all over places like TikTok and other social media. Women wear and do things that are provocative by choice. Just a weird feel when a majority of women in western games have super modest bodies (as if busty and curvy women dont exist) and dress super modestly. Theres more attractive women at church lol.

Maybe something about the way we engage with games is the cause, most people project themselves so deeply into the character they are playing as the line between player and avatar blurs. In any game everyone who isn't the protagonist is beneath you/the MC, no matter how beautiful no one can harm your ego as you are The Chosen One or something to that effect.

But if that's the case games like survival horror that basically put you at the bottom could potentially have the negative effects on body image if the elements are brought together just right, I know ever since watching the Pyramid hat guy have its' way with the legs-and-legs I've been insecure af about how fat my ankles are :(
