But now that I know her friends are claiming she said "Like like" knowing damned well she did not, this bitch said it.

I don't know what 37 million people across the ocean consider themselves. Am I expected to speak on their behalf? I also don't really know what some streamer considers themselves. I don't know these people. I don't get the chance to ask them how they identify.

But I do know plenty of lighter skinned individuals (some nearly as light skinned as myself) who due to heritage and upbringing consider themselves black, and I sure as fuck ain't gonna tell them they aren't. There may have been some folk in my younger days that I had assumed whiteness because I judged only on the most visible trait and did not actually know them. These people DID NOT LIKE THAT.

And I've known Caribbean folk damn near as dark as my phone screen when i turn it off that will straight up CORRECT YOU ON IT if you refer to them as black, because to them that means specifically grew up among the culture that grew out of the united states' freed slave population and that is not something they identify with. They would identify specifically as what nation they are from. now admittedly when I was younger I found this silly, and would have said what you are saying "but your skin is black... so you're black right?" and fella let me tell you, the one time I said this to somebody that dark who didn't identify as black, THEY DID NOT FUCKIN LIKE IT.

So you know what I've learned? I've learned that the scenarios in which I get to tell somebody how they should identify based on their skin color pretty much don't fucking exist. Like, pretty much unless by every metric they are clearly somebody pretending to be a minority to abuse the system (coughrachelcough), they are who they say they are, not who somebody lighter or darker than them says they are. If you want to approach every ethnically ambiguous looking person to possibly behave as part of the "in group" and question them on it to decide for yourself how comfortable you are with their behavior, have at it. Don't be surprised when it ends poorly.

If a person looks black enough where a racist person, regardless of where they land on the racist spectrum, would discriminate against this person because said racist person thinks they're black, then they're black.

If their bloodlines include black ancestors but no one in their right mind would ever think they're black, then they're not black. Because they wouldn't be discriminated against on the account of their blackness.

I answered it VERY concisely in the first paragraph. The rest of "all that" further elaborated and gave specific scenarios on why my answer is what it is.

This post has a lot of interesting things for me to consider and bring up.

Firstly, on terms of appearance. The main reason I even thought to look into Pokimane's heritage is because when I googled her there was a picture with natural hair and less makeup and I was like "wait, is she like half black?"

And I feel like your final line makes the point for me that skin tone isn't really the end all be all. You make the concious decision, for yourself, that you do not identify as black, regardless of skin color or how you look to other people. Would I be wrong to assume this is due to heritage? And by extension, would I be wrong to say that pendulum swings both ways?

No, I answered it with the only rational and honest answer anybody has. I don't assume how other people identify and I'm not going to pretend I get to speak on behalf of people I don't even know.
