Wind Waker? I think he was kinda thrown into it. Pirate Zelda would have been just sailing around. It's Ganon who sets the ball rolling. Ganon could not be a villain and everyone would go about their lives
Isn't Ganon hard-wired to kick off though?
I thought the idea was Demise used some curse to keep an incarnation of his evil coming after the hero's successors. That kinda keeps Link pre-destined doesn't it?

Demise basically made it so that Ganon will continuously return to resurrect him and Hylia made it so that Link and Zelda will be there to stop him.

That doesn't exactly speak much to a hobbits ability to resist the ring's influence. The ring fucked that dude up.

The Hobbit isn't about the ring and its connection to Sauron isn't related to Bilbo's heroism like it is with Frodo though.

Couple things I want to address in this topic.

Cloud actually has the ability he just failed the mental part of it so thats why he was rejected from SOLDIER. Dont know if that was retconned but probably. Then obv the mako infusion process granted him super powers.

Yuri Lowell actually is a skilled fighter in Vesperia. He was shown as a skilled fighter in the prequel movie, and shit I even did a side quest yesterday when he learned the Tiger Blade arte. The chick said the move was created by her dad who was a legendary knight and none of his disciples could learn it, yet Yuri read the book and learned it on the first try.

Kenichi from History's Strongest Disciple. Dude starts out as a below-average high schooler with absolutely no hidden talent for martial arts, no innate secret ability that only he has, no family heritage of martial arts to inherit. He was just a completely run-of-the mill high schooler that gets trained relentlessly by multiple martial-arts masters to the point where Kenichi becomes literally the strongest disciple of his generation.

I'm not sure if it counts, but the characters from the Stormlight Archives aren't chosen ones. They get magical powers because they all suffer from sort of mental illness or have an innate but unrealized desire to help others or seek self-fulfillment.

Sam Vimes in Discworld.

Made noteworthy in that there is a chosen one who is destined to take up the role of king, but it's Carrot, who genuinely doesn't care about that sort of thing and is happy to just be Vimes' second in command.

Fair enough. I was looking at it more as "not being seen as the hero afterwards", whereas Ramza was certainly someone known from the beginning.

How about Bowie from Shining Force II and Julian from Shining Force III?

I may be missing something from these two, but I don't think Bowie was ever destined to be the hero. Julian does have a Child of Destiny on his team, but he himself is literally an NPC in Shining the Holy Ark that wants revenge because Galm killed his father.

Leo from Zone of the Enders is the epitome of the confused innocent child with no special skills or attributes who finds himself challenged with finding a way to repel an attacking military force from destroying his home colony... without killing them all, after he accidentally activates an extremely powerful mech they are searching for.

The flight computer of the mech is tasked with basically giving some kid a crash course in the reality of war within a handful of hours, cause of much shock and horror on Leo's part as he argues with the computer (named ADA) over the morality of attacking or defending, and if it is ever ok to take a life, even in war. So it's like a Gundam on autopilot he has arguments with lol

As the story plays out, both Leo & ADA experience growth as characters, eventually coming to understand each other, and begin communicating with the people the mech was originally supposed to go to.

The other one I really like from this thread is Sebastian in Neverending Story.

But there's that one famous Hobbit that wasn't.

Hobbits aren't affected as quickly because they are naturally lazy and unambitious. They only give a shit about their meals, their pipe, and beer. They are liable to put the Ring on a mantle place and forget about it. Even Smeagol was content to stare at it and use the Ring as a glorified dinner service. The Ring shows a Hobbit a vision of him as a king, and the Hobbit will think that it's too much work even with the Ring.

Started reading The Weakest Contestant of all Space and Time and the MC was taken from our world because he's the weakest, most useless human and he's thrown into a contest to find the most pathetic and weakest fight in the universe...

He eventually becomes the leader of the finalists after they escape... He's still weak and terrible, but the least so of the group...

Cloud from FF7. Literally a loser from his town with no powers and even failed hard as a Shinra henchmen.

Actually, Cloud was such a loser he sucked as a faceless soldier, never had accomplished anything up to that point and no self-esteem. It's only when he convinced himself he was someone else that his entire outlook on life changed completely, with him being more confident, more proactive and assertive. His entire demeanor changed and also how others interacted towards him. He pretty much (inadvertantly) turned himself into David Goggins.

The delinquent manga holy land is about a regular kid that kids picked on a crapton in middleschool. He then becomes a shut-in for awhile, wasting away playing video games in his room 24/7. At some point he gets tired of it, leaves his room to constantly stay out on the streets, and slowly learns to fight bit by bit to defend himself. He eventually gets good enough to where he gets known as a thug hunter. He gets a number of losses to go with his wins and there is characters much more talented than he is when it comes to martial arts, but he definitely gives the vibe of just a normal kid that learned how to defend himself and got really damn good at it.

Always found it kind of insulting to everyone else. He just walked into it while others were busting their asses since they were toddlers, he caught up to Miu and even surpassed her in some ways, despite her being a genius who had also been busting her ass straight out the womb. Then there's Kenichi's last major fight, with someone who actually has no talent, and has to sacrifice his health and lifespan just to lose to Kenichi.

It's the Naruto thing all over again, where the narrative never acknowledges what's actually happening. The closest it gets is when that Boxer calls him a "glitch in the system", even after outright saying that "people without talent can't catch up regardless of how hard they try".
