Been trying to remember the plot of FF12. I remember Ashe and Basch and Vaan and all the stuff they did. Well that Vaan watched them do anyway. I remember Balthier being cool with his cool voice.

I remember Penello not doing a damn thing. I think she got kidnapped at some point.

But when It comes to Fran I don't remember anything she ever did or said. I remember her basically being Balthier's tagalong pet. I know you go to her Rabbit people town one time and there's like 1 dude and 50,000 females which is creepy and implies inbreding like Game of Thrones.

I remember her get mad when you find out she's really old or something.

Did she do anything? What was her plot relevance? Memorable lines?

Basically, 3 main points
1, helped save Vaan and later Ashe during the Rabanastre castle and sewers sequence
2, went berserk in response to manufected nethecite which helped them escape the Leviathan
3, she was necessary to get a key item in Eryut Village (by rescuing one of her tribe in the nearby mines) and the item allowed them to proceed through Golmore Jungle as it and the village were all guarded by illusions

She made grinding those fucking worms in the great crystal less of a chore because you had dat bunny ass to stare at while doing it.

...Danjuro farming, yeah? I never got that far. >.> Every time I get that far in my hunt and side quests it's just too much of a slog to keep me going.

Yeah it was a bitch. You had to kill like a million fo those damn wormy ghost guys to get the larva eaters to spawn. It took me hours.

But now im sure there is some kind of spawn manipulation trick discovered to make it super easy.

I don't recall a dude in her village. Her group seemed like a weird mash up of Amazon wood elf and animal people. I say wood elf cause the living in the woods and Frans "default" weapon iirc is a bow.

Edit: also game seemed to take some inspiration from star wars. Never watched em but I picked up on that. Balthier was basically Han solo so Fran is sexy Chewbacca I guess

I did all the hunts, beat the optional bosses including boring ass Yizmat and I still barely remember half the game.

FF7-10 are so much more memorable.

I remember the Demon Wall Optional Boss fight. That was cool

I remember you could cheese the game by stealing OP weapons from a Hunt mimic, then leaving the area, comeing back, stealing it again until you had a ton of them

Just in she's balthier's (han solo like guys) side kick that does happen to have animal features. She hardly talks too. I said there was inspiration not a pure rip off.

you could remove vaan, fran and penelo from the game and very little would have to change to get the story to still work.

you could just have balthier and fran steal the sunstone getting rid of the one thing vaan does to jumpstart the story since they were going to do that anyway

change the reason balthier goes to lhusu mines since rescuing penelo is the reason they go there in the first place

have the gang find their way to viera woods someway else without frans help

those are the biggest contributions to the plot each of them have and the one major thing they need to change if each one gets removed from the story
so yeah they lift right out with minimal changes

Not everyone needs a major role.

Vaan was the only one who shoulda had more. But I just accepted it as the story was simply being told from his perspective. I love balthier but it was really basche's story with Ashe being right behind in in importance.

I mean alot revolves around basche spoilers his twin brother framed him for murdering the king which set forth events of the game. Basch had to fight tooth and nail to clear his name. Vaan did help him despite originally hating him. His twin redeemed himself moments before dying and basche took over his role in the imperial army. To help ensure the one who would become emperor and be a good emperor remained protected. Hell gabranth the twin being the poster boy for the game lends evidence to this for all we know that's basch as he did take up gabranths armor

if you had 8 or 9 permanent party members a few of them not being relevant to the story is understandable

but ff12 has a rather small cast. only 6 permanent party members and half off them are irrelevant which is something that should not have happened
even ff8 which sidelines everyone but squall and rinoa by disk 3 still had everyone be necessary for the story to work

I don't think for a second every party member needs a major plot role. Nothing wrong with just having buddies or people connected to other characters.

I'd argue Penello's biggest problem is that she's really really boring and bland moreso than she's not secretly the Queen of the Underdark or something.

I mean Quina is great FF9 and s/he doesn't do a damn thing the entire game other than worldbuilding.

That's not even a good argument. Let's go with FFVI spoilers
You'd need Terra to kick off the adventure, then Locke to rescue her and get caught up with the Returners, Edgar as the Returners member, and Celes for the opera plot stuff as well as being the only character you have at the start of the world of ruin. Everyone else tags along for whatever reason, usually to get Kefka.

Or let's go with FFX spoilers
Tidus, Yuna, Auron, and one of the other guardians from Besaid as Yuna's initial guardian. That's it. Does that make them useless? No. They can still have their own arcs going on during the adventure with their own reasons for being there.

Or hell, I'll go with FFIX spoilers
Zidane or Vivi to kick things off for either the "kidnap princess" angle or "black mages are manmade weapons" angle, Garnet, and Eiko. That's it. The contributions from everyone else is unnecessary. You could still help free Freya's village without her joining permanently after. The lower knight is the comedic foil for like 80% of his dialogue until you first fight Beatrix.

Just because their arcs don't necessarily push the main plot forward doesn't make them superfluous. They still push their own plots forward, and those do weave in and out throughout the story.

except that im not just talking about pushing the main arc forward
there are minor things to affect the story
for example lulu doesnt in FFX doesnt move the narrative along
but she provides exposition to tidus and explains the world to him constantly throughout the game
and she is an emotional support figure for yuna
while she may not be important to the overall story as everyone else she still cant be removed from the story without having to change several things to the point where it would be very different if she were to be removed from the plot

where as other fran vaan and penelo dont offer anything like that and can still be removed from the story with very little changes to the plot
im not talking just how relevant to the story they are im talking about their role in the group dynamic and how other characters development requires them to exist

and ff6 has a cast of 14 so it makes sense many of them would be irrelevant

Youre right about those characters being utterly irrelevant. Panelo literally says shes just along for the ride at one point I think Phon coast or something like that. Its the first FF game I didnt bother finishing. They changed directors midway through development and it shows. Those three were just eye candy and I guess it worked because the game sold great.

I agree. You only need a handful of characters be important. But what would a jrpg be like if you only had 3-4 playable characters. I know they've done it but they wherent the best games from a gameplay standpoint. Think 10-2 is the one to do it best but it was the dressphere system that allowed that to be good. Gameplay wise you had many characters
