your sourdough starter is looking at bad things that make it hard. Maybe some flour hoochies

You could always try it backwards, by making a thin wort of water, yeast, and sugar, then add the flour in.

my apt sink has a filter so Im using filtered tap water.

Ive been following this guide

https://www.theclevercarrot.com/2019/03/beginner-sourdough-starter-recipe/

basically started it 6 days ago. Discard half each day, feed equal part flour and water into the remaining mix.

should the jar be sealed air tight? I got a jar similar to the one in that guide above

No. Cover it with a cheesecloth and mason-jar ring.

Wait. What's the temperature around the jar?

i used a mason jar at first with the lid just covering not tighened at all. my place was chilly so i set it under my tv/electronics to warm it up a bit. mine took about two weeks after i got the water worked out. thats a solid guide, just stick with it.

did you pour the hooch out? Ive seen some people say ditch each day, and other guides saying keep the water and mix in before discarding half.

hmm, I think I might have cheesecloth. The jar I have has that attached lid, not sure if airtight. So it should have a bit of open air?

If you dont have a ring, a rubber band will do.

Carbon dioxide and ethanol need to get out. Oxygen and (probably) nitrogen need to get in.
