This and improper use of quotation marks with punctuation are the most common mistakes I see on the Internet. People often leave the punctuation mark outside quotation marks like this, when it should be inside the quotation marks like this. They tend to get it right if theyre writing out a conversation, but for whatever reason, people think if the punctuation mark wasnt part of the original quote its not supposed to go inside the quotation marks, but that is incorrect. Open the nearest book to you and just look at how theyre used there. (speaking of which, theyre/there/their is obviously another big one, as well as mixing up site/sight and effect/affect)

Ah, yes, everyone on the Internet must be British! Why didnt I think of that!

When people use punctuation marks (and I should have specifically limited that to periods and commas, sure) outside quotations theyre almost always using double quotations, so theyre conflating two styles regardless.

Just use it|s for every context and tell people you're creating a new pronoun.

I do it that way, but mainly because I don't actually give a fuck about being a grammatically correct purist versus doing what's most aesthetically pleasing. It doesn't actually make logical sense for punctuation to be inside the quotes unless the punctuation is part of the thing being quoted.

(For similar reasons, I'm a huge proponent of the Oxford Comma, and will shank any bitch who says otherwise.)

And honestly, language evolves through usage - so if enough people do it it becomes the correct usage anyway. So people complaining about it are mostly pissing into the wind.

I'm firmly convinced that once we develop fully effective voice-recognition software so people can text and post on Twitter just by speaking rather than typing, 90% of the population is going to be illiterate again (like most of human history).

im not complaining (and not saying youre saying I am); I dont give a shit how people type as long as its comprehensible. Its just a common mistake Ive observed. I purposely fuck around with capitalization and punctuation on this board because idc.
