I watched a lot of the Godzilla movies on cable when I was a kid. I loved the property, even the stupid sci-fi plots. I really wish there was some sort of Bluray box set. I even liked Godzilla 2000--it didn't try to be Japanese Godzilla, it was a dumb campy movie in the post- Independence Day era of dumb summer movies. Id honestly rather of that than most stuff today. You see, I'm weary of Hollywood movies, so I had been putting off watching the monster cinematic universe. I started with Kong: Scull Island. That was actually a decently executed monster movie. 7/10. My hopes were high.

But oh my god Godzilla 2016 is pretty bad. I have a crush on the Olson lady but besides that...jeez what a snoozefest and most of what's here is cheesy af and takes itself way too seriously. It some a few great Godzilla scenes but the strongest character dies in the first 3rd of the movie.

Should I carry on or just be done? King of Monsters looks sweet. And I could just google Godzilla vs Kong "ending battle" or something for the fun part.

Nah you can watch King of the Monsters, it has 200% more monsters just wrecking everything. Also King Kong if you haven't seen it

Godzilla vs King Kong though had the worst writing and storyline I've seen in like two decades... Er, minus the Star Wars sequels maybe. I mean I don't expect a monster movie to have the best plot but my god it's bad.
Eh... Maybe watch it just for the monster fights though.

The other Godzilla movies afterwards are much closer to standard Godzilla movies. He's treated less like a background natural disaster and more like a character in his own movie. The human parts are equal to slightly less dumb than the goofy sci fi stuff of the older films.

King of Monsters is straight up an updated version of what you know and love about Godzilla, good and bad. Kong vs Godzilla actually improves on some aspects in that department, but the human stuff is always going to be kind of dumb in these. I think the only time it isn't is the original.

The two sequels are much better.

Also, if you haven't already, watch Shin Godzilla. As fun as the monster fights and cheesy alien plots are in most of the other Godzilla movies, it's nice to have something more in line with the original Godzilla every so often. It is easily the best Godzilla movie made in the past 20 years.

2014 was a cool origin story.

But the sequel is where it shine, naturally.

I'd say they succeeded in their initial goal.

King of the Monsters is a legit take on Godzilla. watch it. It's everything we love about the golden age of 'Zilla minus everything the series could do without (comedy and rubber suits). You now have basically the beginning of a whole new Kaiju universe there. I don't think there's a better starting point for new family friendly Kaiju films. I hope someone picks up the pieces soon somehow. It's losing steam.

Kong vs GZ is a much smaller movie but takes the trilogy not only into the realm of actual Kaiju shit (via Mech Godzilla design and themes) which King of the Monsters was only able to skirt around but also by taking King Kong to new heights with the tale of Inner Earth, a Jules Verne twist the Kaiju world definitely needed with the monsters sadly confined to islands and mountains or space, it comes into its own identity as a remake vs the philosophical horror of Shin Godzilla

Some viewers complain that Kong vs GZ it isn't an epic like King of the Monsters, but I appreciate the balance it brings to the first movie. And it suggests a serialized formula that we'll probably never see. There won't be 20 years of King of the Monsters, in all likelihood. So they make the monsters smarter and quirkier while also going darker and more simplistic. Perfect way to top it all off.

In retrospect, I was able to find 2014 exciting through the lense of the sequels as a kind of reprieve . By itself, it risks being boring because maybe you don't believe this Godzilla will get good sequels. But he did! :) Also, the MUTO are fun and the human drama is tolerable. I wouldn't say it's a bad movie. Just dry and overly familiar out of context. It's a big look at Godzilla 2000, and the American GZ. And all the emotions that comes with. But yea

As someone else said, you gotta see Shin Godzilla. It's a top 10 movie.

Bump

Kong vs GZ is a remake of a classic film with a serious twist, and actually used the Mecha Godzilla design we all hoped it would.

Skull Island is weird one imo. I don't plan on ever watching it again, but I'm glad I didn't skip it before watching Kong vs GZ, so........

I watched all the Heisei and Millennium movies years ago. I think Netflix had a bunch of them. The only two I missed are Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Biollante, both of which seem to be very difficult to legally watch. I actually had the VHS version of Godzilla vs. Biollante, but I distinctly remember it being one of the Godzilla movies I didn't watch as a kid.

But I am going through the Showa films right now. They're on both Criterion and HBO Max. I think the Heisei version of Godzilla is probably the best representation of the monster himself. But as goofy as they can be, the Showa movies might just be the most enjoyable. They've been fun to watch for sure.

I like the 2014 one more now that we have King of the Monsters. Cause its good set up. But it isnt a great movie let alone Godzilla movie. Its pretty clear they just didnt want to fully commit to the money of a full SFX Godzilla for multiple scenes but once they knew it would sell they were like fuck it lets go for the sequel.

Legendary is a good company overall that way and now that they have the bigger clout they dont have to be as timid as the early 2010s. It was a big deal that they got the license from Toho in the first place too. So hedging their bets isnt that surprising. If anything it helped Shin Godzilla get made too, to be a nice stark contrast to the more Heroic styled American Godzilla. Still kinda crazy they got Hideki Anno of all people to direct it. It is a bit dry though but with its themes I think thats part of the point.

It did, but it wasnt by Sony or whoever had the rights to Biollante (Miramax?) Still, it was available for a long time right alongside the Sony blurays. If its out of print thats news to me, I thought it was still pretty common. <_<

It's definitely worth watching if you get a chance.

There's even a section where they do an Ultraman homage by having the camera slowly move to the right as the monsters fight in one long take.

And, yes, Mr. Stay Puft is one of the great kaiju of American cinema.

If you're into east vs west sub vs dub stuff, or filming with japanese actors vs american actors using the same kaiju footage for both (like the original Power Rangers or the original Godzilla) I highly recommend Gridman/Super Human Samurai (especially if you are already familiar with it or saw some of it back in the day) There's an anime too I haven't quite gotten in the mood to take a look at.

Those shows are great. I've seen both versions multiple times through.

I actually like the Americanized version better but I appreciate the continuity in the original with the heroes and villains engaging in an arms race of sorts. In Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad, they had all of their weapons and armor right from the start.

I enjoyed the SNES one. I get why it's in the "for fans only" category though. They tried to do something different and, while I applaud them for it, a more standard monster-vs-monster game would have been preferable. (For those who haven't played the game, it's a "cinematic" style fighter in which the game jumps to a cinematic cutscene every time the player or computer performs a special attack.)

I wonder if that would could even be re-released given that Biollante is in legal limbo.
