Like, do you think you inherently knew what games were good or not as a kid?

I think I had a good taste in games. I didn't care about if it was a specific IP or anything as much as if it was "fun to play".

eh...kinda im old so nes era was really a crapshoot for sure. then as magazines came out it got better.

Like the only game I can think of that I loved that I'm not sure if it was actually all that good was Dynamite Heddy on the Genesis.

If it was fun it was good

probably not, but, then again, i grew up in a time where you would only hear of games by browsing the store or through word of mouth, so cool cover art was the best indicator for me on what i wanted to buy

Almost all of the games I used to be obsessed with as a kid are considered classics today, so Idk maybe.

I might have had decent taste but my uncle was a huge gamer and he constantly hooked me up with the good shit.

Ooo, I did like the Cool Spot game. That was legit decent though.

I was lucky to grow up with high end gaming PCs so I very quickly developed high standards, thanks to games like Doom, Diablo, The Realm, EverQuest, TFC

Also always had the best console of each gen back then: NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, and managed to never buy or rent a bad game

As a kid, I made the most of what was available or affordable to me.

I wasn't really in a position to choose.

That said, most games I got to play were decent enough you could get some entertainment out of it even if it wasn't great.

A lot would argue my taste is bad now. Especially my friends

Yes and no. I rarely got the shitty games, and mostly got the better first party and 3rd party games, but slept on some good games until relatively recently.

Its rare that I play a game that I liked as a kid and think "wow this sucks monkey balls". Worst experience is that they end up being too simple/easy. (Ie Rescue Rangers. I remember the Owl Boss used to be the bane of my existence but the whole game is hilariously easy now)

I have never beaten Jungle Hunt.

I mean... I grew up with some of the best games that I can remember. Punch Out, Super Mario Brothers 3, Secret of Monkey Island, Final Fantasy.... those were the days.

Rental places were a thing in the NES/SNES era, so bad taste in games only really ruined a weekend.

A lot of Atari games arent even bad, just simplistic. Even today they make for pretty fun time wasters.

My family had the nes before even having kid's (and like every console after), so I was taught all the best shit by my brother and sister by the time I could game at whenever

I did start looking up videogame reviews when I was around 8 years old so I played a pretty safe list of games.
Wasn't varied at all lol
