Perfect mix of comedy and heart, Stinky Pete is an AWESOME villain, and it wasn't like overly cloying.

Toy story 3 literally copied toy story 2's formula and even story arc... have no idea why its praised so much. 2 is the best series stopping point quite frankly.

2 > 4 > 1 > 3 for me

There are only so many things a toy can have a motivation for, and lotso and Pete were similar, but also very different.

theres also a lot more to those movies than just the villains

True there is a lot more.

3 totally mucks over Buzz as a character and turns him into a joke character. It does that horrible fake out near the end that is so easily just a vacant attempt to produce tears from kids, and it retreads some stuff from 1 and 2.

2 > 1 >= 4 > 3

Toy Story 2 is like a gourmet meal.

But most of the time you don't want a gourmet meal, you want pizza or hamburgers or something, and Toy Story 1 is that. So quotable, so easy to watch a million times.

i loved the first one as a kid, but as an adult, it's really nothing special anymore. honestly though all 3 movies (i don't ever plan to watch 4) follow the same structure as someone else said above: quintessential situation happens that causes toys get lost, and the crew has to save the toy all the while hiding from humans.

it's kind of sad really as i actually find a bug's life to be way more enjoyable than any of the toy story movies, and that movie still looks fucking gorgeous for being made in the 90s, especially compared to other movies released around its time

to add to this: I also dislike finding nemo and its 'sequel', and wall e. really the only 'good' original pixar movies imo are a bugs life and the incredibles. some of their newer stuff is good like onward and coco, and i also found turning red to be very relatable as a child of a narcissist. but also, pixar using the same formulas for other movies is kind of old, too. ratatouille and turning red are pretty similar, as are finding nemo and onward, both the cars movies follow the same formula, etc etc.

1 is absolutely gourmet, its one of the greatest movies of all time for good reason. Its just that toy story 2 was literally the first cg animated sequel that wasnt a cash grab and actually expanded on the first movie by fleshing out characters further and their relationships with each other. In contrast with Disney's other direct-to-video sequels that were of varying qualities.

Everything about this movie was amazing, one of my favorite of all time.

Tell me about it. I regretted watching ts 3 it nearly tarnished the memory of the originals with its whole "oh look how sad and old and depressing everything is now"

The fakeout villain twist was a retread and you see it coming a mile away. The whole "will woody/toys ever find a place after Andy doesn't need him" was literally already done in 2. And the buzz jokes weren't particularly funny. 2's hilarious meta commentary joke about the buzz toys supplies not meeting demand is hard to top admittedly, always cracks me up.

1 and 4 are the best, 3 is the worst but still very good. I think everyone was so bowled over by the hand holding bit near the end, which is admittedly very strong, that the rest of the movie gets artificially elevated. That's how it went down for me anyway.

Man I was so low on 4 cuz I enjoyed 3 so much. And then I watched it, and now it's my favorite Toy Story

Though for me, it's gonna have to be a very pleby 4>3>2=1

It even has a surprisingly good videogame

the TS2 PS1 game was top tier

I think Toy Story 3 has moments that resonate with me better on an emotional level (having been ~20 years old when it came out into theaters, I related a lot to the "growing up and leaving your toys behind" angle), but Toy Story 2 is much more fun to watch from beginning to end.

I honestly agree.

When She Loved Me went above and beyond. I like how the toys had to escape Andy's room and look for Woody, I liked Woody's conflict between his commercial legacy and his love for/duty to Andy, and the whole thing with Buzz 2 and Zurg was really interesting in regards to the Buzz Lightyear lore, a great way of contrasting Toy Story 1 Buzz with Toy Story 2 Buzz, and really fucking funny to boot.

To me, Toy Story 1 is a much more barebones story compared to the later movies. Like tropes aren't bad, a strong foundation makes a strong movie, and frankly the rest of the movies benefit from Toy Story being such a strong foundation to build on. But it does make going back to the first movie more of a chore.

The conflict in Toy Story 1 seems to have brought everyone closer together in the subsequent movies. Mr Potato Head, upon falsley condemning Woody as a murderer, outright says "what have I done?" when he realised he almost caused Woody and Buzz to either be lost forever or destroyed/thrown away. The whole story arc of TS1 is Woody overcoming his jealousy of Buzz and working to bring him back to Andy. So of course future movies would have the group being much more close-knit - they worked all that shit out in the first movie.

Yeah, for sure, TS1 is a classic with a perfect ending, but it's kind of hard to go back to a time when they're all at each others' throats after all the friendship in the next three lol
