I was going through a drivethru and the cashier there was like a 20yo with all these horizontal scars up one of her arms >_>

I heard it's supposedly because they want to feel pain to remind them that they're alive or something. Is that why?

Self-harm is not something people logically think out like this.

Sometimes when my migraines get really bad I'll like pinch my arm just because that slight pain helps a little to briefly distract from the pain of the headache. Sometimes I've kind of felt a temptation to do something more severe like that in order to strengthen the diversion. Maybe it's kind of like that but instead to distract yourself from your thoughts. I could understand it to an extent.

I used to exercise intensely and it never really did anything for me, personally. Not everybody is the same.

Personally, I like using spicy food for this.

Working out is really fucking difficult and time consuming. While cutting or scratching is quick and easy. Whenever I've done anything like that, I needed something immediate and my mental state was too messed up to be able to exercise.

I suppose it would depend on how hot the sauce actually is, but I wouldn't really want to, x.x . I keep some Carolina Reaper sauce around to sample if I really want to get a "buzz" from something spicy.

Haven't cut in years, nor was I what I'd call "severe" cutter, but it did used to give me weird sense of calmness. There's something oddly grounding about feeling pain self-inflicted that is hard to come by. Never touched my arms though for reasons you mentioned.

One of my parents self harmed and I didnt get it nor did I really care.

When I was in HS, I would bite the side of my finger lol. But that was more out of frustration over something going wrong rather than like chronic depression >_>

My ex said it was a release from psychological pain, not sure if that means from a redirection or distraction pov.

eventually most people that cut DO actually figure out that exercise can get the same results as cutting

It always relaxes me. I remember I was doing an all nighter for a final I had no hope of passing. At around midnight, I was fucking tired and I resigned to my fate. So I deeded before I was going to go to bed. But after the deed, I felt like I got recharged full of energy! I was able to stay up and study until 8am, when my final was.

I got a C >_> but man I was definitely gonna fail if I didn't have those extra 7 hours to study lol

I've hurt myself a lot when I'm really mad. Not proud of it but I've done it. Not cutting really but I've given myself a pretty bad black eye once.
Again, not proud of it, very embarrassed by it. Makes me feel like a fucking caveman.

Weirdly cathartic, but even that's not a good explanation for it. It's hard to say. Also haven't done it in a good while.

I don't know how to explain it. It's satisfying in its own right. When you're at the point where you're willing to do that, you're not really thinking about what the scars will look like in 20 years. You may not even expect to live that long.

Exercise doesn't compare. When you're at those depths "yeah, let's work hard!" doesn't cross your mind. Push ups and running don't gratify that same destructive, violent impulse.

its a compulsion for some. for me it released this intense pressure in my head built up from stress and anguish. you don't think of rational alternatives until you recognize it as an issue and are on the path to heal already.

Lots of winners in this thread who judge those who are suffering for an irrational decision that they do to feel some kind of relief from their pain and/or guilt. Of course you won't get it, you're not someone going through it. Be understanding and not judgmental, it's a bad look

Cutting is a little overboard. I personally prefer the stimulation from biting on an annoying canker sore.

That resonates with me. I've heard people phrase it as regaining control of yourself, and in some weird way it does give that. I see some people saying that it doesn't make sense which it doesn't, but neither does the pain you're dealing with.
