The interesting thing here is why early humans didn't drive apes to extinction, but systemically wiped out every trace of our missing ancestral links consistently over the course of several thousand years. Besides inventing things in the way of structures, objects, clothing, and advances in language/culture & society and war, and surviving of course, human's biggest contribution to changing the planet early on may have been eradicating all relatives of humans. I suspect the apes posed neither threat nor interest nor use to early humans, and were actually harder to kill off entirely.
