no.

iirc, it's a cosmic being without age.

there might be a similar being in King's other works, though.

The macroverse holds a lot of cosmic horrors.

None that I know of that are the same species as It, but there are plenty of aliens, and even the devil himself

No he's not right, but in the lore there's a second god like creature that is a giant turtle, which was the only thing holding IT back, iirc. The timeline of that second god is fuzzy for me, but I think the turtle was dying in the child portion of the book and kinda placed all of its bets on the loser's club

Yeah. The second movie did a lot better but the book ending is still the best. Also Pennywise is referenced in other books but never really plays a part. Flagg tends to be the only character that shows up across books

He's referring to the end when the physical form was seen as a giant pregnant spider which can be interpreted in a few ways since Pennywise was considered just a "piece" of the true being. Basically a lot of it was ambiguous and no definitive facts regarding It's origins

Specifically Pennywise no. There are I believe at least 8 other beings like it in Kings universe. Not like clowns, but beings of similar origin and power. Pennywise is not the original form of this being. It's just a form it takes on.

I don't think King has ever confirmed anything. The whole thing is a mess since there's tons of different classifications King uses.

Like Pennywise and Maturin the Turtle are supposed to be brothers and were created by the Other (God). Deadlights are supposed to be Pennywise's true form but then he can't really show his true form because he's from Todash Space. So what we really see is a tiny bit that humans can comprehend.

Then there's the Crimson King, who uses Deadlights as a weapon.

And then you got Dandelo, who is supposed to be the same species but feeds on laughing instead of fear.

We don't really know except that Pennywise took the pregnant spider form at the end of IT.

Monsters from Todash Space are plenty as seen in the Mist. So I guess it can reproduce. Some interpret Dandelo as one of Pennywise's kids.

That's another thing we don't really know. Robert Gray/Pennywise is clearly taking a male form and what's referred to 99% of the time. The spider is referred to as the closest to his true form here on Earth, and the pregnancy leads the kids to assume that it has to be female.

However the Deadlights is the creature'a actual Eldritch form that's still in the void. No gender was given for that and it might even be genderless.

Yeah, that's true. I was more meaning that everyone calls Pennywise/Bob "he/him" but practically no the spider form "she/her" even though it's explicitly a pregnant female spider.

its closest to female. Just because it takes a form doesn't mean thats what it really is.

Oh ok, I'm guessing it might get confusing. IIRC, they avoided the entire issue in the movies because they felt it would confuse.

The kids assume it was female simply because it was pregnant, but asexual reproduction/male reproduction are things. No reason an otherworldly being would adhere to the standard. Furthermore, it refers to itself as it.

The amusement comes from learning that this random town clown monster is actually the embodiment of destruction in all of existence, and the stakes go way up as a result. It also opens the door for Pennywise to take more monstrous forms (spider, deadlights, dimension, etc) as a result, and the cast changes too since they have become adults. It's a book about kids, but I don't think it was ever *for kids* per se. The target audience in general is probably significantly older than the characters of the first half of the story, no?

I was thinking about that. I'm not sure. I'm not even sure that question can be answered. I get the impression Pennywise would be like Galactus, a lone agent, whereas the rest of the universe is populated by extremely powerful demons, they simply lack the level of consistent corporal substance Pennywise has. He has a body, basically. You could argue Carrie is more dangerous than some of the more Eldritch monsters, or even vampires. Etx

I think the original intended audience was boomers, in their 30s or 40s

Unlike the remakes, the book is set for rhe kid section, in the 50s. And the adult section is set in the 80s when the book was written

The book clearly meant to depict a nostalgic view of the 1950s, for readers who were kids then

And I think that is why the remakes updated. Putting kid section in the 80s and adult section around now. To play on a new generation of nostalgia
