Where are you getting that he became the leader of the free world from? Sure he becomes the leader of Balamb Garden (and granted, that's still stupid) but they're incredibly small in the grand scheme of things.

I'm not sure what you mean but the only reason why Edea and Cid started SeeD was because Edea saw Squall and Ultimacia come from the future.

One day, during one of Squall's attempts to find Ellone, a dying sorceress and a teenage Squall appeared from the future. The sorceress passed on her sorceress power to Edea Kramer, the owner of the orphanage who was a sorceress herself and passed away. The teenage Squall told Edea he was a SeeD from Garden and that the notions were originally her idea. Edea told the teenage Squall he is in the wrong time, and he disappeared back into the time portal.

Edea presumed that one day the orphan child Squall would grow up to become a SeeD and kill an evil sorceress. Thus Edea and her husband, Cid Kramer, started the SeeD organization as an anti-sorceress force. As Edea is a sorceress herself, Cid and Edea decided they can no longer stay together, and Edea went into hiding with the orphans who were not admitted to the Garden or adopted.

So you see, there's a reason why Cid made Squall the eventually leader.

FF8 actually has phenomenal world building, its just put in the background and given as cursory dialogue via NPCs in favor of highlighting the stupid story.

For instance, did you know President Deling was GENUIENLY super fucking evil, and that he intentionally shot the corpses of a group of protestors just to show dissenters not to fuck around or theyd find out? The Timber subplot has a shit ton of insane backstory to it thats really interesting, but the vehicle for the Timber occupation plot is two comic relief idiots and Rinoa.

rinoa has the highest natural strength stat in the game
her strength is higher than wards who fights by throwing a ship anchor at people.

disk 2 has her hanging off a ledge for like an hour as squall gives a long winded emotional speech to the students instead of rescuing her

Anybody else find it kinda hilarious that the firearms expert that Squall and company recruit as part of their mission to assassinate Sorceress Edea in Disc 1 is kitted out in clothing that wouldnt look out of place in RDR2, but does look out of place for the location you recruit him from?

Ive heard the rumors about Japanese game developers in the nineties having a weird obsession with the Wild West of American yesteryear, but I typically assumed it was limited to Miyamoto and a couple of folks at Nintendo given how often Western-themed characters and enemies appear seemingly for no reason in Nintendo franchises.

Wasnt there some new content added in the Radical Dreamers edition that clarified who Magus was in CC? Pretty sure I read something about it on here, and how it wasnt what people were expecting.

Guile was originally intended to be Magus in CC

Then that idea was scrapped because they didn't want him to overshadow the other 99 worthless cut-and-paste characters, which is dumb because Kid is literally Schala but whatever

Then the DS version walked it back a bit with a new post-game boss that ends with Magus waking up in some forest with amnesia. Which is dumb because the franchise is dead and there's literally never going to be any payoff to that plot point. But it is what it is.

You get several extra scenes to help with the whole love angle by bringing Rinoa though, plus Selphie and Irvine are hopeless by themselves, they need a Quistis to keep them in line.
