They are not really naturally occurring things.

They have to be created in the right conditions, and the fact that we can actually make these things makes them more valuable and respected compared to something we always have to find.

Both were made because of humans watching other animals consuming the product. Both are far more natural than basically any food we consume.

TBH I'll never understand why the most popular beers are IPAs and Lagers. There's plenty of beers that taste good but you can't ever get them at the supermarket.

Alcohol and caffeine are naturally occurring, but you have to refine them. I guess I was trying to compare it to things you can find on the ground and consume vs things that need to be made a certain way to consume.

I mean, sure you have to actually do something to get the things in their current form but that applies to absolutely everything. We consume literally nothing that hasn't been modified in some form and is thus just as "unnatural." Even if you grow some veggies and then eat them the second that they come out of the ground (can't wash them as that is just as "unnatural" as consuming something that has fermented) you still have to deal with the fact that we have modified the crap out of every vegetable on the planet (either on purpose or inadvertently).

Really it is purely pedantic semantics to view the consumption of a modern beer as any more unnatural than the monkeys eating fermented fruit off of the ground prior to its "invention."

Lots of animals wash food. Raccoons are pretty notorious for washing not just food but literally everything. (Don't let them get your cell phone it's going straight into the water)
