I would think any form of media that is 25 or more years old would be considered fair to say that it is no longer needing to be marked. This could be something like Sephiroth killing Aeris/Aerith or Darth Vader revealing to Luke that he is his father.

There is hundreds of examples, and at what point is there a cutoff on whether a spoiler is marked or unmarked?

i don't think spoilers are real unless it involves someone who is actively about to consume something and someone tells them what happens to ruin it for them

its a spoiler on this site no matter how long. Just mark it an move on. The only time Ive ever been Warned was for referencing a very well know Star Wars moment.

With a lot of sites never cus reasons even though movies are probably older then most of the active website users here.

I've argued certain things with the mods and gotten it overturned.

Like the statue of liberty in Planet of the Apes.
It was shown in promotional materials and on DVD covers. That's simply not a spoiler anymore.

To a normal person with common sense, when it is acknowledged as common knowledge in pop culture.

To this site, a spoiler never stops being a spoiler even if the entire population of the world except just 1 person knows all about it.

Depends on how petty the mod is.

Snow White falls into a coma and eventually comes out of the coma are both spoilers depending on how stupid they want to go with it even though everyone knows the story

What about newer generations that haven't seen these old movies yet? Is it fair to spoil things for them just cuz the movie is "old"?

People you don't know what's important to them.

I think it's easy to just throw spoiler tags on stuff, so why not be careful. Takes the tiniest amount of effort.

Yeah you have to assume people want to watch something when you are in a group

I just mean you have to actively be trying to ruin something for someone, if you just say "and this happened" I don't really consider that a spoiler idk

In a topic with a spoiler tag I don't see the point of calling stuff itt spoilers, unless it's a progressive spoilers topic

Yeah. That's fair. Cause I just avoid the whole topic if it has a tag.

Personally I'd say a year or so?

At the very least, a reasonably amount of time for someone to consume the media.

Like if someone complains about spoiling Snape killing Dumbledore [Harry Potter spoilers obviously] today, I'd say they had more than enough time to find out on their own.

If you came straight out of the theater on opening night and shouted said spoiler though you're a piece of shit.

That said, if someone said they're reading a book/watching a movie/playing a game for the first time, I wouldn't try to spoil them.

I also feel like there should still be a frame of time between a book, and the movie adaptation of a book. Nothing's more obnoxious than people who read the book intentionally spoiling things for people who never heard of the series until they saw a commercial for the movie.

I guess in short? Just don't be a dick about it?

Spoiler tags exist for a reason so use them.

I think you just gotta use reasonable judgement based on age, importance of the piece of knowledge, cchance anyone around is playing/reading/watching/etc it (or will be soon) etc etc

and sometimes you'll mess it up regardless and go "oops" but whatever

I think the only time "old" spoilers are still spoilery day to day is if someone is like

"I'm reading A Song of Ice and Fire for the first time having not seen Game of Thrones"
"Oh did you reach the part where *spoiler* happened?"

Like that's just a dumb/malicious thing to do.

Last I heard the site's policy was that if it's in promotional materials it's not a spoiler.

I was also told that screenshots of dead aries on FF7's store page that anyone trying to buy it can see do not constitute "promotional material" so who fucking knows lmao

I was once moderated for talking about the Wesker fight in RE5. They claimed that his presence in the game was a spoiler. When I pointed out that he was literally featured in the trailers for the game, it was overturned.
