Amazon: Condenses the entire second age into a five season television show
"Fans": this isn't consistent with the books at all. There are black people.

Anyway it should be immediately obvious that the lore has been completely rewritten. That doesn't really matter. It was either rewrite the lore or not have a story. That's the issue with adapting a history text into a narrative.

If parts of the Silmarillion ever get adapted you bet your ass things will be rewritten.

The final fight was badass. I was expecting them to do some kind of camera panout and reveal that the entire area is swarming with orcs in all directions.

It's wild that the elves thought orcs were extinct when there's an army or them living in the Southlands. If anything stretches my suspension of disbelief, it's that.

I mean they could've made it more accurate timeline-wise and only introduced Elendil and Isildur in later seasons.

But now we're supposed to believe that Elrond is going to end up looking like Hugo Weaving in only a couple hundred years when he's already thousands of years old? >_>

There's no confirmation it's a different continuity. I mean, Edward Norton became Mark Ruffalo in the MCU. I don't think we're supposed to assume Elrond transforms into Hugo Weaving.

At the same time, the only thing that's the same between both is how Sauron looks. So there's very little proof they are the same as well.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I think my wording with transforming into Hugo Weaving came off the wrong way. I meant like, yeah, it happens and it doesn't mean the continuity changes.

Lol whoops. Well I guess just having read The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales recently, my mind keeps having to jump through hoops to get this to all work. I can enjoy it more if it's its own canon. At this point I'm half expecting Isildur to have a baby and it's Aragorn lol. Arathorn was just an alias for Isildur, and the Third Age is only 87 years long.

The only way I've managed to be ok with the show taking liberties with the source material is accepting that it exists in its own continuity. I can't imagine it's supposed to be in the same continuity as the Jackson movies.

Sometimes you just gotta enjoy the ride for what is it. You also have to consider there's lots of complications with respect to the Tolkien Estate.

There are lots of changes to the original movies and it's one of the greatest things ever created. I wasn't sitting there going "Gandalf really took 17 years to get back to Frodo in the books, fuck this shit"

Isildur's hot sister Earien is an entirely new character. He only has a younger brother. If they can make it work, I'm all for it.

Aside from the timeline changes, I'm not seeing too much deviation. To be fair, Amazon wanted to do a show that was set over the thousands of years of the Second Age, but they had to change their plans because then only Galadriel and Elrond would be the same and they'd have to constantly get new characters every season and lots of characters wouldn't be introduced for several seasons.

People think the Meteor man is Gandalf? Didn't the trail of the meteor kill things in it's path, like the leaves that fell in the elf city? And the fireflies die when he used them?

It's Sauron.

It's Sauron.
Gandalf is the logical answer, as he was an angelic being sent to Middle Earth around this time, who had famously good relations with Hobbits.

Which is exactly why it's probably not him, since it seems like they're being deliberately vague on the matter.

The whole dead fireflies thing is weird and I'm not sure what to make of it. It doesn't really make any sense for this character to be Sauron (though I kind of love how the show is playing around with the idea of "who is Sauron" so much, it was a great choice for such a mysterious character famed for his deceit).

If I had to throw out a guess it's either Saruman or Gandalf, maybe leaning Saruman. It could also be the Balrog.

Gandalf came in the Third Age. Sauron doesn't make sense because it seems like a pretty risky thing to do with everybody watching the skies.

Now that we know how the timeline is working out, it's becoming a bit more apparent it's likely gonna be the second Blue Wizard and that he's probably looking for his buddy, the first. They arrived in the same year the One Ring was forged.

Sauron = Halbrand. Blue Wizard is my best guess too for meteor man, but I also think the showrunners will just say fuck it and go with Gandalf because name recognition.
