Successful conductor, married, had kids, wealthy.

Then gets herpes which spreads to brain and destroys his hippocampus, giving him short and long term memory loss. He forgot who he was,

He could remember random things, like that he was married and loved his wife (who he knew nothing about), names of some foods (but not the taste), how to play piano.

But suffered from severe mood swings/angry issues understandably from the situation and spent his time constantly writting "I am alive!" and then crossing it out and writing it again over and over.

Psychologists and health professionals analyzed the shit out him for years.

And the most uncomfortable thing is all this research is fascinating but there is no way he could have possibly consented to any of it and they just did it anyway :/

Fuck. That is so depressing. I can't tell if he is suffering or not though.

The parts about still loving his wife are actually really sweet. Of all the memories he lost, he still managed to hold onto that. Probably just chance, but I can't help but romanticize that aspect.

I don't believe in belts. There should be no ranking system for toughness.

...I think he's got bigger problems to worry about than this.

He said he was not.... In the most depressing way possible:

You're the first human beings I've seen, the three of you. Two men and one lady. The first ... people I've seen since I've been ill. No difference between day and night. No thoughts at all. No dreams. Day and night, the same blank. Precisely like death.

Is it very hard?

No. It's exactly the same as being dead, which is not difficult, is it? To be dead is easy. You don't do anything at all. You can't do anything, when you are dead. It's been the same. Exactly.

Do you miss your old life?

Yes. But I've never been conscious to think that. So I've never been bored or upset. I've never been anything at all, it's exactly the same as death. No dreams even. Day and night, the same.

When you miss your old life, you say, 'Yes, I miss my old life', what do you miss?

The fact that I was a musician. And in love.
