This letter is for the future, if I should die or be taken prisoner or become a vegetable! Written 17.7.22. It is very hard to write, Im crying, but I must. Beloved Lera, tell [our son] what kind of dad I was, that we were sent as cannon fodder to Zaliman [a village in Kharkiv province]! Without armor, without ammunition, without normal weapons. This is about our situation. When our son grows up, tell him his dad wanted very much to return home to be the best dad ever. Ive been drinking and Im writing emotionally. I know that all this will be forgotten and that you will be living your own life, that youll find a new husband, that Ill simply disappear in the war like all the guys. Unfortunately, I didnt have a normal life. Say that dad was an athlete, didnt smoke and didnt drink. Its terrible that everyone has forgotten me. Its very hard to accept all this, but all people die. And this cycle cant be changed. Its bad to die in the summer. If only I were at the seashore.

It really can't be overstated what a massive fucking pile of shit Putin is.

When Russia was invading Ukraine, there wasn't much else of a choice but to root for Ukraine to wipe out as many Russians as possible to defend their homeland. It was an invasion. It was an illegal occupation of Ukraine for the sake of vanity, and it was pointless and cruel. It led to thousands of needless civilian deaths for the sake of Russian vanity. At that point, the only thing you could do was hope that the Ukrainians had the resources they needed to wipe out as many invaders as they could to stop their home from being forcibly seized.

But the fact is that Russia sent waves of men into Ukraine to enforce the will of the country, to die pointlessly so that Putin and the Kremlin could boast about recapturing a former territory and being a stronger military superpower for it. And as you can read in this letter, soldiers being sent in understood the folly of what was happening, and at a certain point they understood they were going to die a pointless death.

Invading Ukraine was already a petty, evil act on Putin's part. You can be a smug fuckface and go "well actually there was tactical planning behind the invasion of Ukraine", but it was still petty and evil above all else. But Putin betrayed every Russian citizen he sent into Ukraine. The ones who lived became war criminals, and the ones who died died for nothing.

I truly hope the rest of Putin's life is full of pain and suffering. And for the record, this is why a world without war is the only way to honour a soldier - because regardless of who wins and who loses, every soldier loses in war. The best way to honour the sacrifices of those who died is to make it impossible to send their children in to die like they did. The world would be a better place without warmongering pieces of shit like George Bush, Dick Cheney, Henry Kissinger and Vladimir Putin

This is why I think, that it's very important for the west, for all of us, now and in the upcoming years, to choose our words wisely when talking about the war.
Saying "Fuck you, war!" is very much okay.
Saying "Fuck you, Putin!" is very much okay.
Saying "Fuck you, Russia!" is somewhat okay... but leaning towards generalization.
Saying "Fuck all Russians!" is not okay.

Let me explain:

In this war, there are a lot of victims. First and foremost, the Ukraine, its soldiers, the citizens and their relatives. They deserve all the help they get from the west. They deserve a massive amount of reparations payment from Russia during the next decades.
The rest of world suffers from the consequences of this war as well (food crisis, increasing prices for oil and gas, inflations, etc.).
But we shouldn't forget, that there are also citizens from Russia who have to be called victims!

There are many Russians who oppose the war. Naturally, most of them live abroad, because they would risk being arrested from the Russian government if they were in their own country. By saying "Fuck all Russians!", upright Russians like the ones who oppose the war would be thrown into the same pot as Putin, his government and followers. That'd be unfair. Remember the spiral of hatred that's been a thing in many games, movies or tv shows? It's always important for morally superior people to avoid making generalizations.

I'd also call many young Russian soldiers victims. A lot of them had/have no idea what's going on. How could they? Their own government is nuking them with disinformations for years/decades. They might had access to western news sources in the past and thus had the opportunity to question their government, but it's easier said then done when you are living in a country where surveillance is omnipresent. Many of these young soldiers are just doing what they're being told, because that's all they have ever been taught.

Wars have always victims on either side. This war is no different.

There's one man with blood on his hand. It's Putin. He's the asshole that has to be stopped by any means and punished. And his entourage of course. His loyal followers.

A (Russian) artilleryman came and said Father, we saved you from the Nazis, Valeriy said. And I said to them, Show me one.
Valeriy said he spoke to the young soldiers in Russian and tried to make them see that they were destroying the once-close relationship Ukrainians and Russians held, particularly in this part of the country which is so close to the border.
I told them they destroyed a mans house, and he was from the Kursk region (of Russia), Valeriy said. Everyone here has relatives in Belgorod (in Russia) and other cities.
He said at one point, Russian reconnaissance forces came to him and asked, Who have we come to liberate here?
That confusion and sense of disillusionment from among the Russian ground troops was likely a major factor in their retreat from this region in the past week.

It sounds like some of this is the Russian military being unwilling to keep fighting knowing that they're being lied to.

While there are absolutely some Russia soldiers that are gleefully commiting atrocities, there are some being sent out there against their will. Being sent out to die.

All because a tiny man doesn't want to be forgotten.
