I'm absolutely no fan of lolis, but that character doesn't even look like one. She just looks like a short woman.

There's 3 other women in the picture. neither of them are drawn as childlike as her. Also, im pretty sure Lucy is the youngest of the 4 and she's way more adult.

Childlike? The other 2 women in the picture are glaring. The other lady is smiling and has her arms above her head. I've never seen this anime but that picture isn't portraying her as a loli in the slightest. She just seems like a short whimsical woman.

Loli's and real children are not the 1-1 you think it is. Just because a adult is attracted to the former does not mean they are the latter. Nor are they a gateway even.

Which is the most important aspect of this. And why I personally don't care, they aren't living things to be abused in any capacity, nor do they promote the abuse of real children. So it makes little sense to me why people get so emotional over 2D images.

As much as I like that show, no she never goes away. Even in the later seasons she'll still be around and dressed in nothing more than her underwear. She's definitely what I hate the most about the series. Gotta please the pedos tho, and they'll justify it by saying "ackshually, she's a 20000 year old dragon so it's ok"

If there was a child in an anime that wasn't being sexualized it would be nice if you would call them a child. Do you really need another word for it that's based on a book about a pedophile? I watch a lot of anime but I've never been comfortable with that. If the word doesn't imply sexualization, why does a second word for children even need to exist?

I think because it's more about describing a character archetype than it about describing a child. Like it's entirely possible for an anime to feature both children and loli characters. I think SAO does that with the AI character.

In that line a "loli" is specifically the term for "a little girl that is attractive," with a bit of the implicit understanding that it is "that *I* find attractive" with the usage of the phrase. If someone in Japan actually wants to talk about a little girl they don't use the term "loli" unless it is explicitly sexualized in nature because that is the point. Otherwise they might use something like "joshi" or "onna no ko" (or if formal: "shojo").

The other aspect of the whole loli "debate" is about it not being the same as "pedophile", which is one of those "lolol, I'm so 'technically correct' you can feel my body odor across the ocean" sorts of understandings. Lolicon specifies it being a girl, pedophile does not. Thus they are totally different. Similarly the age range is much more broad with lolicon (hence the "nuance" jab between pedophile, hebephile, etc. that absolutely doesn't matter to anyone not trying to actively sexualize small children).

When it comes to teens, that's a bit of an awkward scenario. Like if you're 14 it's perfectly natural to be attracted to the 16 year old, and since you're the target demographic...

But then adults are also attracted, but also there's character design (A 16 year old drawn like a busty 21 year old is going to attract both teens and adults for the same reason), as well as the inevitably of a teen eventually growing much older than their waifu. Perhaps this is putting too much thought into things, and none of it applies to real life regardless.

Tweens though? That's fucked up regardless. Wtf Big Mouth?

Not exactly. People throw it out without the implicit "that I find attractive" part, but "loli" is still very explicitly used for sexualized children basically exclusively. The problem, of course, being the overwhelming amount of children being sexualized in Japanese media. It also ends up with some bleed-over due to the author's other works. For instance, Riko in Made in Abyss is mostly not fetishized visually but she will still be referred to as a loli because of the author's past works in pornography in which he made a bunch of child scat/piss porn. And much like how dog whistles are used with nazis, the fact that he constantly had her have bowel movements was not unnoticed.

Also, I guess it should be said: if it wasn't about being sexualized then the correct terms would be used. However, because 4Chan really took hold of the whole affair, and this is a pre-"every pedo left for 8Chan" 4Chan, "loli" is used in place because they explicitly wanted to bang the children in question. If you don't want the pedo argument brought up, stop using the explicitly pedo word.

Yeah, those kinds of fans want you to believe there's nothing pedophilic about it.

It's a stupid, fruitless, and justifiably losing battle.

Yeah, an equivalent term I've heard people compare it to is jailbait. Even if the character itself is completely innocent, it says a lot about the person calling them jailbait, both people using it positively and people using it negatively.

That's actually a pretty good comparison that I hadn't heard before. I'll have to remember that one.

They're pandering to their otaku audience, something you're more than familiar with. There are lot of other far less niche terms for both short people and little girl in Japanese, including chibi for the former which is still a slang term but without the sexual connotation or shogakusei, grade school student.

No, it doesn't mean that they are calling her literally underage: they just are implying that she looks child-like. Saying that they aren't sexualizing the crap out of her, however, is just absurd.

To be fair, Aoi Yuuki and the character that's literally designed after her exact proportions do heavily sexualize themselves.

The book came out in 1955, the fashion style came out in the 90's/00's. Lolicon, however, came out as a thing in the 80's.

So the order is: normal name -> name used for a sexualized child in a book -> name for a sexualized girl in Japan -> fashion trend based around an extreme abuse of skirt.
