It's been a while since we've had a general drawingthread, it's easy to forget to bump it. Last October, however, I actually managed to complete Inktober. These kinda topics help.

That's this year's prompt list. If anyone wants to participate, by all means do so, the more activity the better. It's less that you have to draw well, and more that it's a good way to get you drawing at all.

Tag, I probably won't go off the list but I've always wanted to learn to draw and I have a pretty neat book on drawing that has 30 days of exercises, so I plan to get through that by the end of the month.

Oh yeah, by all means don't bother with the prompt list if you don't care for the prompts, it's just about drawing when you can.

By the way, even though it's Inktober, it doesn't have to be in BW, on Paper, in Pen, or whatever. Just do whatever you feel like doing. To start off, I'll do a recent practice piece (that I screwed up), and the prompt for the first day (a day early, because it seemed annoying).

Day 2: Scurry

Since Fable posted, I thought I might as well try to stay ahead as well. Tried out a few different ways to 'color', this is probably the way that came out the best for what I was going for. It meant to be complex, more to see how you could get different textures without scrutinizing the whole thing.

And it might not really be scurrying, but eh, who's counting.

Edit: Like the work we've seen so far. Fable with the animation. What Seph posted looks kinda like it's from somewhere, but I couldn't say where.

I love the interpretations of scurry I've been seeing. It's mostly mice.

Day 3: Bat.

I have a bad habit of not spending enough time on the focal point of the image, AKA, the bat. I feel like the background bushes look the best here, which doesn't feel correct. Also I tried to mess around with lighting stuff on the shirt, looks bad. It's something I really gotta work on. I think my other coloring isn't exactly good, but the shirt looks egregious. I should probably do a study or something on how light effects a shirt. And I'm sure there are tutorials out there.

Day 4: Scallop

Tried to focus more on line variation/weight stuff, since every reference image I saw had a ton of lines, so it was practically unavoidable. Couldve worked at it harder to be sure, but I dont think its awful. I think I have Flame done as well, I actually worked on it before Scallop. Its more cartoony fire, but it let me mess around with lighting stuff again, in a sort of low stakes way. Might try messing around with it more first.

Maybe working ahead will allow to to focus hard on Bouquet, which, considering my other works thus far, has a high chance of looking bad if I try to make it complex.

Day 5: Flame.

So yeah, as I mentioned, this one was more practice for how I might make flames in the future, I decided to not bother trying to make a real piece out of it. I'm curious, do you all think the first or the second looks better, in terms of lighting? Part of me kinda wished I had spend a bit more time on it now, tbh, the lighting looks more, I dunno, bulbous(?), than it should be.

I went minimum effort on scallop i am very sorry.

Small update. Flowers are annoying, and I'm imagining how much worse it would be if I wasn't using a reference. Didn't work on it much yesterday, so I haven't even started the coloring process. >_>

Day 6: Bouquet

Not really happy with how this turned out. Part of me thinks I shoulda just traced the flowers and focused more on the colors. Doing both felt like it was really draining. But in the end, neither really turned out great. A lot of it just seems like scribbles, so tracing would've made things a lot more legible. It's annoying how I think I'm getting something kind of right, but as I work on it, the flaws become more and more apparent. What doesn't help is that I pretty arbitrarily added line weight. If I was more consistent about how it was implemented, it would probably read better. Things to think about.

Edit: After posting it, it really does just look like scribbles, it's actually pretty funny.

Also your roses look awesome. That's so many flowers and petals to figure out but that absolutely reads as roses. Also the light coloring and varying line weight looks very fashion illustrationy.

Day 7: Trip

I thought I did okay with the vehicle, but I was drawing too small to be able to do the characters well. I tried doing them in pencil first, but I got the feeling erasing it enough to fix things wouldve just made things worse. By the way, my initial thought with trip was someone falling over, I decided to do the opposite. Same with bat.

$200 for a full body character art. Im doubtful you could get away with charging that much. Not as a knock against you, but just how good the one I bought from is, imo. Ive seen some people with lesser art than you try to charge $130 for a full character art, and I doubt they get much traffic. Art is difficult to price. In the end, I think if you charge, you gotta charge based on how long itll take you to do something quality.

You might even want to say something like Commissions open, price negotiable. Then base your price off of what they want. Sorry if Im not much help. And I really hope you dont take what I said the wrong way. $200 was tough for me to swallow even though it was a professional mangaka.

Yeah, I probably couldve phrased it better. Art value is tough to judge, and how much people want to pay depends on who the person is.

I think your art is great. It may not mean much coming from me, but still you have some real talent imo.

Nice it is great to always try and improve your skills, and to remember to never lose yourself as that it what makes your art your own imo.

Also if you're looking to start commissions, you could always just throw numbers out there and see if they're interested. It helps that you already have people requesting them from you, so you could PM them and say "Hey, does $X sound good to you?" And if it's too much, you can knock it down to whatever still makes the project worth your while. Idk, I've never really tried to sell my drawings, but I think having people interested already gives you some room to experiment.
